Chapter 11 - I hate cancer

*HALEY'S POV*

"Haley, Jake, we need to talk to you about something" my parents take a seat on my bed and give us blank expressions.

"Ok.."

"It's about your grandmother"

"She's not doing too well and she can't manage on her own, we need to go their for a few days, maybe a week to help her pack up her things so we can move her closer to us" my mum says with glossy eyes

"D-do I come with you?" I choke

"No, you still need to focus on school, you and Jake, will you be okay here by yourselves? We'll get the neighbours to check on you and we'll call you every night to make sure you're ok, Stacey is going to come with us" my dad says

"When are you leaving?" Jake asks

"Tonight, it was a last minute decision and we're sorry for springing this on you"

"I-is it bad?"

"Yes, your grandmother has cancer in the lungs, she won't be here for much longer but we have to stay strong and know, she had an amazing life and she's so proud of you"

"Will we get to see her, before..." Jake trails off

"You can see her, yes, she'll be staying in a hospital and I'll be with her, my boss has assigned another doctor to work with her but I will be there along the way, I don't want you to see her like that, so please, understand when I say you can see her a couple of times.. but when it gets too bad, I don't want you kids seeing her in that way.." My mum sobs as she finishes the sentence

I don't know what to think. My grandma, the sweet old lady I've known all my life, the woman I grew up with, the one who taught me how to sew was going to die. She was going to leave this world after being here for almost 87 years, and all because of stupid cancer. I don't want to say goodbye, I don't want to be strong. I want her to be in my life, I want her to see Stacey grow up, but I had to look at the positive side the bright side, she would be in a better place, she wouldn't feel pain and she would be reunited with the one she loves. Our dear grandfather.

I didn't realise the tears were streaming down my face until Jake wrapped his arms around me. He was tearing and to see that broke my heart. Jake was one of the strongest people I know and he was crying. Right in front of me, in my arms, my older brother, my rock, had broken. Jake was close with grandma and grandpa, always helping them out when he could and throwing away his I-don't-care persona away for them. He was real, he was true when he was with them. Minutes passed, minutes that felt like hours and I realised Jake had wiped his face, and mine but hadn't let go of me, like he needed me to support him. The sobs softened until the were merely a memory and we stayed, sitting, silently reminiscing about all the good times we had with grandma, it was soon broken when my mother spoke however.

"We need to go pack, Haley, can you please help get Stacey ready" my mother says, blankly.

"Y-yeah" I get up and turn around to look at Jake who nods at me, letting me know he is ok.

"Haley, why aren't you coming with us?" Stacey asks as I put her clothes in a bag for her

"Because I have school Stacey, but I promise, I'll talk to you every night, ok?"

"Ok"

"Okay, now put this on" I hand her a top and some leggings

****

"We'll be back soon, stay strong, we love you both" my mum says and gives me and Jake bone crushing hugs

"We will"

"Bye Jake, Bye Haley" Stacey frowns

"Bye Stacey, be a good girl" Jake gives her a hug and I follow

"Bye" we say finally as we watch them get into the car and drive away.

"Come on, let's go inside" Jake slings his arm over my shoulder and we walk inside and lock the door.

The rest of the day is spent lounging around. Not doing much and just enjoying the weekend. Tomorrow Jake is going to stay the night at Katie's house, he said it was a date and he was really looking forward to it. He asked me many times if I would be ok and even asked if I wanted to come. I thanked him and reassured him that I would be fine and that he should have some fun. I also reminded him how ridiculous it would be for me to go on a date with my best friend and brother.

"Haley! what do you want for dinner?" Jake calls from the kitchen

"Um.. pizza?"

"Ok, I'll put some in the oven, I think we've got those frozen ones, I dont know mum stocked up the fridge"

"Okay cool, I'm just gonna have a shower, I'll be out in about 20 minutes" I get up and head upstairs.

****

"This is really good, for a pre-made pizza"

"Mmm.."

I take another bite of the pizza and have one more slice before deciding I've had enough.

"I'm gonna head to bed Jake, goodnight" I give him a hug and head upstairs to my room where I change and collapse on my bed. It's been a long day. I allow sleep to overcome my senses and drift off into dreamland.

~HALEY'S DREAM~

"I love you.. I will always love you, my dear" my ill grandmother chokes out

"Gran, I'm not ok, I don't want you to go, please.." I cry

"I can't hold on, I can't do it..." Her voice is a mere whisper and I struggle to hear her.

~END OF DREAM~

I wake up. Tired and sweaty. The dream, the dream of my grandmother, the dream that felt so real. The dream that had resulted in me curled up in my bed, crying. I just want to scream. To scream until I can't scream anymore and my lungs decide to give up.

A/N kind of a deeper chapter, I don't know if this was very good, parts of this were true, some of this related to my life in a way and I hope some of you can relate and know that everything happens for a reason.
