Chapter 9 - A close call
*HALEY'S POV*
"I just need to straighten my hair" I say from the bathroom as Katie impatiently waits on my bed with her little brother, Jack.
"Hurry up" she says
"Ok, ok give me 10 minutes" I say, quickly picking up my straightener and picking up small portions of my hair.
After 7 more minutes I was done.
"Stacey! come here! I need to put your costume on you!" I yell, chasing my sister around the house.
"No!" she giggles
"Stacey, come on!"
"No!"
"Stacey, don't be difficult, Haley's taking you out, be a good girl, ok?" Jake says picking Stacey up and kissing her forehead.
"Ok Jake, I'm sorry Haley" she pouts
"It's ok Stace, come here" Jake hands her to me and I put her down and I grab her hand.
"Let's go, you need to get ready, Jack and Katie are waiting"
Jake sends Katie a quick wink.
"Jake, do you have something in your eye?" Stacey asks and I burst out laughing while Jake blushes and smiles.
"He's fine, come on Stacey" I pull her along with an amused grin.
*KATIE'S POV*
Wow. The way he was so calm and cute with Stacey just melts my heart. It was adorable and it made me smile just watching him. He's so perfect and he's mine.
*HALEY'S POV*
"There! finally, now let's go" I say to Stacey after I finally get her costume on her.
"Jack, leave Jake alone, you're annoying him!" Katie says as we walk past Jakes door.
"He's alright" Jake ruffles Jack hair
"Hey!"
"Come on Jack, we're leaving"
"Okay, bye Jake!"
"See ya little guy"
"I'll see you girls later then" Jake waves
"Yeah, bye"
***
"Come on Haley, hurry up!" Stacey pulled my hand along as I tried to talk to Katie
"Calm down Stacey, there'll be enough candy for you"
"No, but I want to get it now!" she yells, pulling her hand from mine and running across the road. What she didn't realise was there was a car coming down the road at the same time.
"Stacey!" I yell as I run to her and try to get to her before the car does.
I see her get pulled off the road in a blur and I look up to see a very familiar face holding onto her. Dylan.
"Oh my god! Stacey!" I call as I run across the street with Katie and Jack running closely behind me.
"Come here, don't ever do that again!" I hug her and pull her close to me.
"I'm sorry" she begins to cry into my shirt and i dont know what to do to comfort her further
I look up at Dylan who is there, holding hands with a small girl, around my sisters age.
"Thank you so much" I say, relief washes through me when it sinks in that Stacey is ok
"No problem, is she ok?" he asks peering at Stacey
"I think she's just shocked" I gently stroke her hair
"Stacey!" The little girl holding Dylan's hand says to my little sister.
My little sister peeks out from in my chest and tries her best to smile at the little girl in front of her
"Are you ok?" The little girl asks making Stacey nod her head
"Do you want Mr. Cuddles?" she extends her hand out to try and give my sister a little stuffed monkey
Stacey nods and smiles
"Here you go" she hands it to my little sister
Dylan bends down and looks at Stacey
"Hey stacey, remember me?" he asks kindly
She nods and I'm left very confused
"I remember you tickled me" Stacey finally speaks but her voice is soft and shaky
"You mean... like this?" Dylan says and tickles Stacey who thrashes around in my arms and giggles loudly
The action surprised me a lot. Dylan didn't seem like the kind of guy to do that and this simple but cute action made me think that maybe Dylan wasn't so different to my brother. Perhaps he hides behind his bad boy persona but is really sweet and caring on the inside? or maybe not.
"Dylan, can you walk me home?" Stacey asks while pouting.
"You really want me to?" he asks
"I don't know if I can.." he says in a teasing tone.
"Please!" she begs
"Sure, Stace" the fact that he just called her Stace was a shock to me as well. Stacey never let anyone other than family call her Stace, it was the nick-name our grandfather gave her and after he died we all took it bad but Stacey cried for weeks and weeks on end.
She smiled widely and clapped her hands. It looks like she's forgotten about almost getting hit by a car. I'm grateful because Dylan helped her forget, she won't be as shaken up now.
"Um, Jack and I are gonna keep going for a bit and then we'll head home, I'll see you tomorrow Haley, bye Dylan" she nodded politely in his direction
"See ya Katie" I gave her a quick hug and Stacey did the same
"I'll see ya squirt" I ruffle Jacks brown hair
"Bye Haley" he waves
They walk in the other direction and we begin walking home, to say its awkward is a understatement. Should I say something?
"How do you know my little sister?" I ask in a polite manner.
"Well my little sister, Jess here, she goes to school with her and your family came over for dinner the other night"
"I didn't know she was your sister actually"
"Oh, I've heard a lot about you Jess" I smile down at her
"All good things of course" I add
"I wouldn't take you to be the kind of guy to own a cute little cat" I smirk at Dylan
"Hmm.. well there's a lot you don't know about me, Miss Haley" he says mysteriously
"Well here you are" he says signalling to my house. Stacey hands Mr. Cuddles back to Jess and goes inside after saying goodbye.
"Thanks again, you really calmed her down and sorry for kneeing you in the balls" I smile sheepishly and thank him once Stacey has gone inside the house
"She's good kid, I'm sure she's a handful though, just like her sister" he winks and chuckles lightly
"Yeah, well I'll see you another time then" I give him a small wave and wave at Jess too
"Bye Jess" I smile down at her but she hugs me instead and I hug back.
