Chapter 29 - A new addition to the family
*HALEY'S POV*
"I'll help you take them for walks and shit" Dylan offers as we pull up into my driveway.
"Sounds good. Let's just hope mum and dad don't kill me" I look nervously out the window, subconsciously tapping my foot and biting my lip. Here we go.
"You want me to come in with you?" Dylan asks, obviously noticing my uncomfortable posture.
"No, it's okay. I'm sure it'll be fine" I nod lightly, opening my door and stepping out, Melody securely in my arms as I peer through the passenger side window "Well, anyway. Thanks for the ride, I'll see you at school tomorrow"
"Sure. bye, princess" he winks at me before speeding off towards his house, not too many blocks away from mine.
"Well, let's hope your cuteness makes up for this spontaneous decision" I look at Melody before sighing and walking up to my front door. I reach out, pressing my finger to the ringer, hearing the familiar door bell. Moments later, it swings open quickly, revealing a shirtless Jake, his hair ruffled, his lips looking slightly swollen and red. I look around him, Katie stands from the couch, a blush adorns her pale cheeks as she looks extremely uncomfortable.
"What the fuck is that?-" Dylan begins, eyes narrowing to take in the puppy in my arms.
"Shhh! Are mum and dad home?" I whisper, my eyes darting around the house, legs ready to sprint up to my room if I hear one of them.
"If mum and dad were home do you really think this would be happening?" Jake gestures between Katie and himself, I cringe. They're cute and all but I don't need the visual
"Whatever. Can you just help me hide her?"
"We're not keeping her!" Jake says at the same time Katie walks beside him and says, "Oh my god, she's so cute!"
He looks over at Katie, his eyes say his hesitant. smirking, I say, "guess we're keeping her then" Jake groans in response,
"Alright. But only because she's adorable"
"Yay" I do my best to clap my hands together in excitement, causing Melody to flinch in my arms. I look down at her, a frown etched into my face as I scratch behind her ear softly, "it's ok" I coo.
"What's the matter with her?" Katie asks, concern laced in her tone as she steps forward, patting the puppy
"Dylan and I found her on the side of the road, in the rain. She's probably just a bit shaken up" I inform them, they both nod their heads
"Why doesn't Dylan keep her then?" Jake asks, looking at me while narrowing his eyes
"He can't" I say simply, not making eye contact with my less than impressed twin brother.
"Oh, you'll get over it, Jake" Katie says, looking up at him before she steps onto her tiptoes, quickly pecking jakes lips. He smiles, "Maybe if you keep that coming" he winks, I look away.
Why do they always seem to forget I'm in the room?
All too quickly I hear the garage door opening, most likely because mum and dad are home from work early. Shit. I look at Jake, a look of pure shock on his face, mirroring Katie's and I's.
"So the one day we do something suspicious they're back home" Jake announces, groaning.
"Jake, help me hide her!" I say, frantically looking around the room for places to put the puppy.
"What about the bath tub? just for now. Mum and dad never go into my bathroom anyway and I'll keep an eye on her" Jake says, gently pushing me upstairs before he and Katie follow closely behind.
"Hurry up, Hales! I can hear them coming upstairs"
I put the puppy down, gently into the dry bath tub. Jake slides the curtain across the railing before softly closing the door behind us, just in time too because mum and dad stride up
The stairs after hanging their coats up on the rack. The give us a side ways glance and I cough uncomfortably
"Hi Mr and Mrs Michelle. How was work today? I hope you don't mind me being here" Katie steps in quickly, smiling politely at my parents. They return the smile before mum speaks "it was a stressful day but a lot of work was finished, thank you for asking Katie" mum looks at us as if you say "why didn't my own children ask me how work was?"
Jake and I grin, sheepishly and mum and dad head off to their room, clearly tired after a long day at work.
"Oh god" I breathe a sigh of relief, clutching my heart dramatically
"Well shit, we need to tell them sooner or later, Hales"
"I know" I nod, running my hands through my hair.
