Chapter 33 - Don't forget me

*HALEY'S POV*

"You remember that time we tried to make a pool in your backyard and we just ended up digging a muddy hole in the middle of the lawn?" Hamish turns his head to face me, a distant smile on his face as he recounts some of our earliest memories

"And my parents were so mad they made us cover it up again? that was hilarious, you looked so scared!" I laugh at the distant memories.

"Good times" Hamish mumbles, his eyes travel to the stars and he lifts his arms to put them behind his head, sighing, "Good times" I repeat, my gaze following his.

The stars that litter the dark sky add to the serenity and I find myself relaxing and unwinding.

"Do you think," I pause, sitting up causing the springs of the trampoline to squeak, crossing my legs as I look at Hamish, "that after everyone heads off in their different ways, that we'll all still be close?" I ask softly, I can't help the tears that spring to my eyes. These past few years have been absolutely amazing and as cliche as it sounds, have made us all into the people we are today, and there's no doubt I would've been able to make it through high school without my friends. It's scary to think that we'll all be going separate ways, aside from a few of us, Paddy is not attending uni and Jasmine is going to London to study law. Katie is staying here, while Jake travels to America to pursue his love of football. As for Dylan, well, I don't know what lies ahead for him but I certainly hope we stay close. Carter is staying here and attending RMIT university to become an engineer and I will be attending Melbourne uni.

"We'll still be close, Haley, we've had some amazing memories that none of us can just forget" Hamish sits up too, he notices the tears in my eyes and smiles, shuffling closer to wrap his arms around me, just like when we were kids.

"I'm not going anywhere" he pulls back, playfully adding, "even if you want me to" I laugh a small laugh, shaking my head slightly.

"What time is it?" I ask suddenly

"Its, uh, almost midnight" Hamish says, glancing down at his watch before looking up at me

"Shit" I mutter, climbing off the trampoline and putting my shoes on quickly

"You want me to drive you?" Hamish calls, putting his shoes on and walking over to me

"It's alright, hame. I'll just walk"

"At midnight and alone? I don't think so, give me a sec, I'll grab my keys"

"Thanks Hame" I smile, heading towards his posh car.

"Where were you?" Jake asks, stuffing his face with an unidentifiable food.

"Hamish's" I tell him, taking my shoes off and leaving them at the door

"At midnight?" he raises a brow

"Yeah, lost track of time" I shrug, heading into the kitchen to grab a glass of water

"Alright" Jake brushes it off, waking past me and to the stairs, "'Night" he tells me

"Goodnight"

"Oh and Haley, I'm going to see grandma again tomorrow, wanna come?"

"Yeah, sure" I smile even though he can't see, Jake has come a long way since grandma was first diagnosed with cancer. I guess he's come to terms with it all.

I put my glass in the sink and make my way upstairs. I change quickly and collapse on my bed. Sleep overcomes me and I feel my eyelids closing, taking me into dreamland where nothing can hurt me.
