Maya Hart
Maya woke up in the clubhouse and found the boys staring at her. She didn't know what to think of it but she just gave them a side eye and looked out the window engaging in the world that seems to have been up for hours before her. She could only see the fence and the suburban houses but she focused on the sun and how it seemed to have been shining so much recently.
"Morning, champ." Benny said to her joining her at the window. Maya thought he was such a nice kid and hoped to meet a guy that spectacular when she was older.
"Morning. I didn't delay any plans for today did I? I normally do not sleep that late. I-I I was just comfortable I guess. I am not sure. Oh well." Maya spoke looking down at her feet on the wood paneling.
"You couldn't ruin anything." Benny said smiling at her hidden quirkiness underneath her hard shell.
"Any one got money? I will head down to the shop and get us another ball." Squints said grasping the one that got gutted yesterday.
"No."
"Nope."
"The pockets are empty.""I don't get my allowance today."
"Sorry bud."
They all murmured. It was another perfect day to be outside enjoying the summer air.
"Well it's getting hot up here, lets just hangout in the sandlot anyway. My pa is home and you know the lawn needs mowing about the time I show up." Ham groaned.
They all nodded and proceeding to talk and have fun in the sandlot.
The boys raced and Maya sat there making small talk with the other boys around and Benny never stopped running or doing pushups or teaching Scotty more tips and tricks on how to swing and stand at the plate.
"So blondie where'd you learn to play so good?" Yeah, yeah asked her as she took a swig of orange cream soda.
"Around. I guess." She shrugged off. She worked hard to get good but her family kept her wanting to push herself. If she didn't want to work at the sport she would have stopped but watching them kept her outside. She used a bunched up old t-shirt as a make-shift glove when things got rough and she couldn't play in real games like that so she would stand at the fence and her father would pitch or hit to her while her mother captured it all on home videos.
Sometimes Maya wishes her mother would have recorded her mother's beautiful face instead of the ugly glove and grass stained jeans. She never wants that day to come when she forgets what she looked like.
"How about you show Smalls where 'around' is. He needs it more than the rest of us." Ham teased.
"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. Continue eating that sandwich and napping while Smalls keeps practicing. Let's see who gets where in five years." Maya spoke and smiled confidently as the boys oooed and chuckled at Ham.
"Oh which one are you going steady with?" A boy spoke on a bike wearing a blue baseball uniform.
"Excuse me?" Maya said. Instantly knowing this guy was not the friendly type.
"OH NO!" Squints said dropping his head and groaning at the sight of the group of boys coming their way.
"Its easy when you play with a bunch of rejects and a fat kid Rodriguez." The boy in blue spat. Maya thought he could be the leader of the group. She felt awkward as he eyed her.
"Hey shut your mouth Phillips." Benny stammered angrily.
"You shouldn't even be allowed to touch a baseball." He retorted at Ham.
"Crap face!" Ham came back.
"You're all an insult to the game." Phillips rolled his eyes.
"Pee drinking crap face!" Ham insulted again as the boys cheered him on with a 'Yeah!'
"Porter you ain't good enough to lick the dirt off of our cleats." Phillips shrugged. This time it was Maya who rolled her eyes.
"Watch it jerk." Maya spoke. People were quiet for a second. They must have forgotten about her for a second.
"Porter... you play ball like a girl." Phillips spoke and everyone gasped and al eyes were drawn at Maya who stood there with a convenient smirk on her face.
*Yes I changed it up because it is 2016 and my feminism flag shall be flying high and mighty no matter what the original may be :)*
"That's it. We can take you right here. Right now." Maya said crossing her arms as the boys agreed and cheered behind her.
"Okay let's do it. But on our field. Probably the closest you'll ever get to a real diamond." The other boys scoffed.
Maya and the rest of the boys followed the crew on bikes as Maya grabbed her bare hands remembering she didn't have a glove.
