Maya
Maya was in High School now and wasn't as popular as her ex-boyfriend Benny who was this whole cities pride and joy. Along with his sweetheart of a girlfriend Abigail.
Maya wasn't allowed to play on the school's baseball team because she was a girl and they wanted her to play softball. So she played on a summer league team and during school she would just go to the Sandlot to practice since the crew stopped using it since they made the High School team.
Their school was huge, way bigger than their middle school so she hasn't seen much of any of her old friends. If she bothered to go to a baseball was the only time she would but that'd rare and they never would spot her in a crowd.
She always felt it was a shame they never bothered to mend things after the incident. She couldn't deny that Benny changed her life.
There were countless nights she just chucked a baseball at her garage and forgot about real problems.
But that was a long time ago. Their adventures and summer days were long gone. She has one other friend now who is slightly geeky and tech savvy. His name is Wyatt, they are pretty close and hang out often.
Maya would wear the blue LA hat often, maybe it was her subconscious telling her she missed Benny. But in reality she forgot it's meaning and was just a fan of baseball hats. That one was her favorite.
Truth is, if she were to see Benny today she would just see him as just somebody that she used to know.
Benny
Benny would go to school today just like every other day. He checked his hair in the rearview mirror since he no longer wore hats like he used too.
He lived for this moment before walking into the school doors to see Abigail. He would see Maya with some guy walking into the side doors of their school. His heart always sped up at the sight of her and it still has everyday for two years. Benny only saw her once a day and never acknowledged her either. She was far enough away for him not to get to upset and he wouldn't even know what to say.
He couldn't say he loved her. Which was the truth.
What would everyone think if he said he had been lying to Abigail all of this time? Benny did enjoy her friendship, but she wasn't his first crush.
He got this far without any further troubles with Maya so maybe this is what was supposed to happen.
"Hey Benny." Benny's girlfriend smiled giving him a hug.
"Hey!" he said nicely.
"You see that chemistry is changed to the west wing?" DeNunez said handing Benny the changed schedule.
"Really that's weird." Benny said.
"Yeah, I guess they had a leak and we have to go in a substitute classroom." DeNunez shrugged.
"Oh okay, well it's all the way on the other side of the building. We should start walking." Benny said.
They all nodded and Abigail grabbed his hand as they all started walking down the hallways.
As usual the halls were crowded with people so it was a shock to him when out of all people, he bumped into her and her books flew everywhere. Well it can't be that shocking because it took two years for it to happen.
"M-Maya." He said and bent down to help her.
She looked up at him with her gorgeous eyes and took a double-take once she saw it was Benny. Her face fell and that sorta hurt.
"Hey." Benny said again helping her up.
His friends were no help, they just watched their interaction intensely.
"Maya you okay?" The other dude she hangs out with asked her and she smiled nervously at him.
"She's fine. C-can we talk?" Benny answered for her glaring at the guy and whispered the last sentence in her ear to try to remain private.
"What is there to talk about?" She said confused.
Benny tilted his head back in grief and Abigail grabbed his hand again and squeezed it tight.
"She is right, what is there to talk about?" Abigail said concerned.
"I guess nothing. I gotta get to class." Benny shook it off and walked past everybody and took a seat in the back corner of Chemistry.
"Hey, maybe you should talk to her." Smalls said taking a seat next to him in Chem.
"Nah." Benny said and his voice cracked embarrassingly and then he just stared blankly at the chalkboard. He tried to ignore it but the reason it cracked was because of the pain in his throat from holding back tears.
He stayed silent the rest of the day and just received weird stares wherever he went in school. Most of them didn't even know he ever knew Maya. Benny figured when he talked to her it left them confused earlier.
He kept it all in for two years and focused on nothing but baseball.
He knows how Maya felt when she told him baseball took her mom away.
It's over. He struck out.
