Maya was just refilling the bucket full of baseballs and the boys walked over to her.

"Okay we're here. What's the big deal? What you got for us?" Ham said.

"Just a second, he'll be here any second." Maya said

"Who? We are all here." Scotty said.

Maya looked at Ham, Squints, Yeah, yeah, Scotty, DeNunez, Benny, Bertram even Timmy and Tommy and smiled.

"I know." Maya said.

"Sorry I'm late Squints! My shift ran late." Wendy Peffercorn said stumbling onto the lot.

"Wendy?" I said.

"I asked her to come, she's a part of the group now too." Squints said.

"Okay? Fine." Maya said wondering why because she doesn't play baseball but it's fine she'' just sit on the side and cheer anyway.

"Is this the gang?" Maya heard her guest's voice from behind her.

"Yea, thanks for coming." Maya smiled and ran up to hug him and his dog before guiding him to where she wanted him.

"Mr. Myrtle?" The guys said confused.

"Now, I've been hearing some things. I can't make any judgements but can I tell y'all a story?" He said and took a seat on the splintery bench. Everyone gathered around and sat waiting for him to speak.

"Maya, what is this for?" Yeah, yeah whispered in her ear when he sat down.

"Just listen, He has good stories." Maya said.

"Now, I reckon you still have that gift of mine. That uh baseball, signed by my friends. Right? Well that ball did mean a lot to me. I mean besides the fact it's worth a boatload. Now, when it was gifted to me... I could still see. I got to see the how grateful everyone in my life was. They were grateful for each other. We all were. Now before my accident we uh we were close. We were on the same team. We wanted the same things. But now that I'm a little different and don't want the same things do we talk? Do I say I even have friends anymore? Ever since I became blind you could say I never fought for those friendships back. Not only were my eyes blind... my heart was. You all right here ain't disabled in no way. Why are your hearts and minds hurting? I let my disability be my only friend for the longest time. I let my depression be my only acquaintance. They reached out but I was blind. You all are young, some are in love. Open your eyes." Mr. Myrtle spoke and he let out a burly laugh as he wiped his eyes.

"Thank you Maya, for letting me talk. You became my new friend. I wouldn't want that gift in anyone else's hands." He said and Maya got up to hug him.

"No thank you, you are a great man." Maya replied.

"So what do we do now?" Scotty said looking at the ground.

".... I don't know. That's all I got." Maya said still holding on to some type of miracle that everything will be fixed.

"You forgive. It's simple boy." Mr. Myrtle laughed.

"I think we are all pretty sorry. And we are all grateful for each other. Look at all we have accomplished. WE just won! A rag tag group of kids who didn't deserve what the good Lord gave them showed everybody who we are. We showed them who we are... when we weren't even at our best we won, just imagine how much more we'd have if we got there." Maya spoke again more urgent to have her friends back for good with no fractures.

"Maya is right,"

"yeah,"

"yep"

"true"

"yeah" The boys echoed.

"Scotty what about you?" Maya asked him.

"I'll do it." He seemed to be hesitant but would agree just for Maya's satisfaction since she won the bet.

"Maya if he doesn't want to be our friend anymore just let him go, stop forcing it." Benny whispered in my ear.

"Alright. I guess that's that." Maya said and walked over to Ham and Squints stealing Ham's soda and taking a sip.

"Hey blondie get your own!" Ham yelled.

Maya chuckled, "I'll get my own when you get on a weight loss program."

"Get the dirt from under your nails then I'll consider your recommendation." Ham retorted and Maya chuckled.

"Hahaha, I love you guys." She said and continued to laugh.

Ham was the best at comebacks.

"Yeah,yeah... do you think I'm doing the right thing with Scotty?" Maya asked him later on.

"Uh, that's a tough question. I guess you are, I mean it's gunna be hard but that's what happens when you date inside a friend group. I'd never do it but I can see why you did. I think time is the only thing now." He said and gave her a sweet side hug mixed while tickling her sides before she punched his gut as hard as she could and he doubled over mixed with laughter.

"It's getting late, I should probably go home guys. I bet my dad cooked a big dinner for me." She said grabbing her bag getting ready to leave.

"You know what, I should get going too. Let me walk you home Maya." Benny said jogging after her.

"Uh, okay." Maya smiled softly.

The walk started off silent as the skies turned pink and the southern California town started to get chillier.

"You did great today, everything really. You know, I can only dream to reach everything you look down upon, that's how amazing you are. Everything you do is extraordinary, I could never come close." Benny said.

"Agh thanks." Maya blushed, after all the shitty things he'd done she can't find it in herself to do anything else but crush on him.

"I'll see you tomorrow?" Benny said as they reached the front doors of her house. He laced his hands in hers and squeezed tightly.

"Yea, yea. Of course." Maya said waiting with her hands being lightly squeezed by his and his thumb grazed her skin.

"That's like the best sentence I've heard in a long time coming from you." Benny blushed.

"What about this one?" Maya said standing on her tip toes and leaned in to kiss his cheek.

"That doesn't count is that a sentence?" Benny said annoyingly.

"Shut up." Maya said embarrassed and she felt her cheeks heat up.

Benny unhooked their hands and used his finger to lift up Maya's chin.

"I missed those blue eyes, I've never seen any so blue." he admitted before closing the space between them and kissing her spontaneously and sweetly.

After the kiss Maya wrapped her arms around his torso.

"Thanks for walking me home." Maya chuckled.

"No problem. Oh and one more thing." Benny smiled and took his hat off his head and placed it on Maya's blonde waves.

"You won the bet after all." He chuckled.

Maya blushed while securing that hat on her had and watched Benny walk down the driveway and head home.
