Maya
Maya was walking in the school hallway and she has been ignoring Scotty and the rest of the boys since yesterday.
She just didn't know what to do, she loved both the boys and it was a situation she never thought she'd be in. Scotty was so good to her, but how could she believe in that love when half of the time her heart was being ripped apart by Benny. After yesterday she decided that if she could jut get away from everything for a little while things would clear up.
No boys at least for a minute.
She hated herself because a piece of her wanted to run back to Benny for the thousandth time but at the same time Scotty needed her. She wasn't sure if she needed him. If she needed any of the boys.
"Maya?" I heard Wyatt say as he me at my locker unexpectedly.
"Wyatt?" I gasped at him speaking to me.
"Yeah, uh. The whole school can't stop talking about the shit that group you left me for has been doing to you and each other." He rolled his eyes but at the same time sounded concerned.
"Yeah, it' no big deal honestly. We are all fine." I forced a weak smile.
"No big deal? Okay, well I jut felt like I had to tell you that from the stuff I have been hearing, you need to cut it off by now. They don't care about you. No group of friends that are supposed to be the best group of friends there ever were would treat you like this Maya. I never treated you like that have I?" He said his advice while Maya looked at him with an uncertain look filled with some sort of frustrated passion behind it.
"No, no you never treated me like that. But you did end our friendship. I don't want to talk to you about this, honestly you don't know anything about it. Whoever you heard my life story from tell them to stay out of it too! We are the best of friends there ever were because I know we can fix this. You and me Wyatt, we can't fix this. But God help me if I can't fix it between the original sandlot boys." Maya huffed then shut her locker walking back towards her other class.
Talking to Wyatt annoyed her so much because they could have connected again but he was only concerned with the rumors he had been hearing. She didn't have time to prove herself to him, they used to always be on the same page.
Anyway she got through the rest of the school day and decided to stop at the sandlot and practice her sandlot in spirit of the championship game coming up.
She was so close to hitting the fence on th third lob she threw herself and her pile of baseballs was growing short so she walked over to the red bucket with the rest of the balls.
"Here catch." She heard a voice say and before she knew it she caught a baseball being thrown to her. It was a dark figure in the makeshift dugout but after a second glance she realized it was Benny.
Maya played with the baseball she caught from him and realized it was the one she got that was signed by the Yankees.
"Why did you bring this here?" Maya said referring to the ball.
"It reminds me of my favorite summer. I couldn't go to school today, so I hung out here to make sure my dad didn't get suspicious."
"I've been here for like a half an hour, how come you didn't say anything?" Maya said.
"Did you want me to?" Benny paused, "I didn't think so." He answered his rhetorical question.
Maya stood there awkwardly with the baseball in her hands, she hasn't talked to Benny obviously since he begged her to take him back.
She looked at Benny again with a weird look as Benny started to form a frown as he recognized her distance.
"Talk to Scotty lately?" Benny asked quietly.
Maya shook her head slowly.
"Oh, well that's alright. Maybe you should, he probably misses you." Benny spoke.
"Like you?" Maya said then cleared her throat nervously as she felt her face heating up at the stupiddity of her question.
"Talk to Scotty Maya. I'm done, I am done with the boys they can't even look at me after what I did to Scotty. I am done with baseball, the championship was all I ever wanted. I am done with you, I know it's no use anymore I'm sorry. I know it's over and you should go and be with the boys and Scotty, they are your real friends. I am a piece of crap who can't even play in the championship game."
"You aren't a piece of crap. And I get you feel bad you can't play in the game. But you can't do anything about it now." Maya said sternly."I let my team down. What if we lose?" Benny spoke.
"You care if they lose, not if you play?"
"I can't let them down."
"Well you can't change it. It was your consequence."
"That's punishing Scotty too.""I have an idea." Benny added.
"What is it? You can't cheat." Maya warned."Play."
"Me, I can't."
"Why not? "
"I am not allowed."
"For the season, for the playoffs it doesn't say who can and can't move up.""Why would I help you?"
"It would help everyone." Benny said and that made Maya stop and think. This was what she told Wyatt she would do earlier. She has to fix this.
Maybe this is a start.
For the best friends there ever were.
Except Maya can't let Benny get to me as anything any more than a friend. Maya hasn't even talked to Scotty yet or anyone else besides Benny really.
Maya got frustrated with how come she always ends up hanging out and meeting Benny when it's the last thing she wanted to do.
The only good thing is maybe this whole baseball thing was actually a good idea.
