Maya was waiting outside the boys' locker room as the baseball practice was ending and she couldn't leave until she was assured Benny wouldn't leave.
She had been waiting nervously for a while so she thought if she hit some balls it could take her anxiety away a little bit.
She jogged over onto the high school field and grabbed the equipment before squaring up on home plate and throwing up lobs to herself hitting them where she wanted them to go.
At first all the balls were grounding out awkwardly because she wasn't focused. Maya forced herself to let go of everything because it wasn't helping her at the moment. She just wanted to play how she usually did.
She threw up the ball again and her bat came in solid contact hitting a solid hit. Maya was pleasantly satisfied as she watched her hit.
"Maya!" She heard a voice yell.
"Yeah?" She said.
"I have been looking for you. Can we talk." He said and Maya realized it was Scotty and braced herself for what he had to say.
"How did it go with Benny?" She said biting her lip.
"He is the greatest friend anyone could ask for. He needs a bit more time. Maybe we could all get together tomorrow though. That should be good." He said expecting Maya to be upset.
"So if he is stepping back because you have feelings for me or whatever.... what are we?" Maya said looking at the dirt not wanting to be anything but friends with him.
"I don't know. I am truly sorry about Benny." Scotty apologized.
"No. You're not. If you were this wouldn't have happened." Maya said and the rest of the guys emerged from the Locker Room. She caught Benny's glance before he looked away with a frown.
"I really am sorry! Believe me!" Scotty said.
"You're killing me Smalls just drop it. You ruin everything! Don't talk to me anymore! I don't even care if you like me because I don't like you!" Maya said and her eyes began to sting with tears as the rest of the boys stared with their mouths open.
"What happened to Scotty? Hey, what will it take for you to forgive me?!" Smalls said walking after Maya as she was about to leave.
"Scotty?! Fuck you Scotty." Maya said more than upset as it was hitting her that she no longer is with Benny.
"Maya, woah. Just calm down." DeNunez said pushing his hands in a downward motion cautioning her.
"I am so done with all of this." Maya growled rolling her eyes.
"What about us? We are your friends Maya. We aren't here to hurt you!" Yeah, yeah called out as she started walking faster away from the group.
"Maya." She heard a voice say and he grabbed her arm causing her to stop her getaway.
She turned around to see Benny looking remorsefully in her eyes.
"Maya, give him a chance. Feelings won't just go away like that. NO matter how much you cuss at him." Benny said and she tried hard not to fall for those hypnotizing hazel eyes.
"How can you even say that?! You love me right?" Maya said extremely in pain because Benny is the one she went through everything with.
He didn't say anything but he practically flinched when Maya said what she said.
"Benny, I am not going to date anyone else! It wasn't even a real kiss. Can't we all just let it go?" Maya said.
"I would, but these are my boys. Smalls is like my little brother. I mean, Scotty is like my little brother." Benny said looking at his friends with a grateful essence.
"Benny, you don't have-" Smalls said.
"I want to. You outgrew Smalls, it's okay." Benny interrupted.
"And if Scotty is in love with you too how could I not give him a shot? We all deserve a chance right? Maybe he could be better for you than me right? You already know he is a better kisser." Benny said with a slight smile.
"NO STOP. THAT DOESN'T MATTER! YOU MATTER! NO ONE LISTENS TO ME AND WHAT I WANT!" Maya said finally exploding at Benny before storming off for real this time and she raced home to her house and when she arrived she locked herself in her bedroom.
She leaned on the back of her bedroom door and let out a deep breath raking her fingers through her scalp fed up with everyone in her life.
