First Crush (Sandlot)

Part 26

Maya

Maya walked to the sandlot just as the sun was beginning to set. Just as planned the boys were all ready wearing their swimsuits with towels draped over their shoulders.

Maya had on a black two piece and an oversized band t-shirt over her bikini with chuck Taylor's on her feet with a brown towel scrunched up in her hands.

"Benny didn't find you yet?" Squints said checking his watch.

"No, I don't see how he is going to be able to sneak out." Maya sighed as the boys seemed a little disappointed too.

"Well should we leave without him?" Ham said uncertain.

"I don't know, let's give him ten minutes." Smalls shrugged.

"I agree, besides when was the last time we were all here together... in the sandlot." Maya smiled and the boys smiled too. Ham grabbed a ball from the bin and held it in his hands.

"I really love this place." Bertam said and we all agreed.

"SO how are we going to break into the pool." Squints interrupted.

"Well I have some bobby pins... I can pick the lock if someone brought a flashlight." Maya said pulling a pin out from her hair and watched as the piece fell in front of her face.

"no!"

"Awe man!"

"All I got is a lighter." Squints sighed.

"Wait a lighter might work!" Maya said trying to improvise.

"Really? I mean sorta it's like a candle I guess. Come on it's so hot and Benny ain't coming. Let's go swimming!" Squints said.

"Okay!"

"Yeah!"

"Swimming! Yeah!"

"Let's go!" They all cheered and took off towards the town pool.

"Guys, be quiet! Squints shine the lighter really close to the lock I can't see." Maya huffed jiggling the bobby pin furiously.

"Maya, it's not working." Ham groaned.

"Give me a second... hang on.... got it!" Maya said satisfied and they pushed the gate open flooding into the closed area.

"Cannonball!!" Ham cheered splashing into the pool.

"Marco!"

"Polo!"

"Marco!"

"Polo!"

"We are way to old to be playing these games." Yeah, yeah laughing as he tackled Bertram in the water taking his Styrofoam football.

"That's the best part!" Smalls cheered and Maya Hi-fived him in agreement.

"Maybe I could learn to swim today." Squints snorted.

"Oh yea remember the last time you went into the deep end?" Ham joked and Squints glared at him.

"Maya you are a strong swimmer you could teach me." Squints said hopefully.

"I don't know, I could try." Maya shrugged.

"Okay you have to relax, and try floating on your back." Maya said guiding him with her hands.

"Yea but how do I stay above the water?" Squints growled.

"Think about keeping you weight even I guess. Arch your back slightly and spread you arms." Maya demonstrated the position first then went over and supported his weight until he was floating on his own.

"AM I DOING IT?! Is it that easy?!" He flailed before going underwater.

"Sort of. Yeah you did! Good job." Maya tried to encourage but she isn't the best at that sort of stuff.

"Hello? Are there people out there!" They heard a concerned voice come from outside the fence.

"Someone's here! We've got to get out of here before we get caught!" Smalls whisper yelled but they all just froze standing there in the water.

Moments later a petite frame came into view and all of their mouths dropped open to see a face, a familiar face.

"Wendy Peffercorn." Squints drooled.

Wendy stared at the group of children in the pool about to blow her whistle when she saw a somewhat tall boy with instantly recognizable glasses on and stopped.

"What are  you guys doing here? I heard complaints of mischief... I didn't think it was you." She growled.

Squints crawled out of the water and approached her, surprisingly she didn't bacl away.

"Relax, Wendy. We just wanted to escape the heat." Squints said locked on her beautiful eyes and red hair.

She was distracte by the beautiful blonde in the pool and crossed her arms, "Who is she?" She pointed to the girl who was Maya not recognizing her as being a part of the group when she saw them last.

"Oh? That's Maya, she's a great friend." Squints said and gave Maya a thumbs up.

"She your girlfriend?" Wendy said fixing her bouncy hair.

Squints smiled and got closer to Wendy. "No, I'm waiting for someone actually."

"Really? Who?" Wendy said as her face became blank.

"You." He said and Wendy let out a breath and she leaned in to kiss his lips for two seconds.

After Wendy pulled away it was as if Squints was seeing stars but he knew all of his friends were incredibly happy for him.

"Come on, get out of the pool. Let's hang." Wendy smiled softly taking his hand and they sat at the pool chairs talking quietly away from the rest of the group.

"So we are not in trouble?!" Smalls waved at them.

"NOO!" Wendy laughed waving back at us in the pool.

"Wow, Squints and Peffercorn." Maya said in shock.

"Maya and Benny." Smalls mocked her.

Maya just looked down and blushed at his comment.

"You know I really admire Benny more than the rest of the boys do Maya? He is like a big brother to me." Smalls said genuinely.

"Really how so?" Maya said knowing a little bit about their past but the details.

"Well it's a long story there was just so much he did for me. But overall he was a great friend. When I had no one he gave me a glove to play the game. He taught me the game. He let me in and I have made the best friends anyone could ever ask for. He really is a good guy." Smalls spoke.

"You don't like him too do you?" Maya joked and he splashed her with water.

"No! I just wanted to tell you whatever you think about Benny, you should aways think the best of him. Friendship is his best quality." Smalls said giving Maya more advice.

Maya gave him a sincere smile then thanked him.

"It's getting late I think I'm going to head home." Yeah, yeah said climbing out of the pool.

"Yeah I should better go too." Maya said following him.

"Squints don't stay too long you have school tomorrow!" Ham teased.

"I'll take care of it!" Wendy smirked and Squints had never looked so in love in his entire life.

"See you tomorrow!" Maya called out leaving the gates of the pool picking up her bobby pin and heading home.
