First Crush (Sandlot)

Part 14

Benny

Benny was having a hard time sleeping so he crept out his bedroom window and went in the backyard to throw his baseball at a target on the shed door.

Pitch after pitch his his frustration wasn't getting any less. He hated all of these new feelings and just wished everything would stop.

"Ugh!" Benny groaned and threw his glove on the ground after another pitch missed the target.

"Benny! What are you doing? Get inside." His father said from the back door in sweatpants and a t-shirt.

"Alright pop." He sighed and dragged his head as he went back into his room and slammed the door.

"Benny! What's the matter with you?" His father groaned at his behavior.

"I have played baseball everyday. I love it. I love the guys. But I want Maya." He said and was irritated with himself for not having baseball as his first choice.

"Boy, go to bed." he rolled his eyes and shut Benny's door.

Benny didn't say anything but just sat on his bed in his white t-shirt and blue shorts.

7am

"Shh he's sleeping!"

"Let's just wale him up"

"Yea, yeah we can't wait here all day."  Benny heard the chatter of the boys and sat up to all of them standing around his bed.

"What are you guys doing here?" He said confused.

"We have the perfect solution to your problems!" DeNunez said proudly.

I chuckled at them and they all looked at each other.

"Come on!" Squints said grabbing Benny's arm and yanking him all the way to the Sandlot.

"What? What is the big solution?" Benny said.

"Yea hurry up. Before Maya shows up." Smalls whispered nervously to Ham.

"This is DeNunez's cousin, Abigail. Hear us out Benny." Ham said as a tall girl with black hair came around the corner.

Benny didn't say anything. He just stood there and listened to his friends talk.

"We can come to the sandlot at this time everyday, we can end early. SO you can hang out with Abigail. She can be your new girlfriend because she isn't into sports so she won't hang around the sandlot and cause drama." Squints explained.

"Yea like Wendy?" Ham teased and Squints raised a fist at him as a comeback.

"What?" Benny said trying to understand how they could just give him a new girlfriend.

"Hi, I'm Abigail." She smiled at Benny. There was no denying she was quite beautiful but that has no effect on how Benny feels at the moment.

"Hi, I'm Benny. Where you aware of what they are planning?' Benny tried to say politely.

"Yes, unfortunately. But I figured it was my only chance to meet you. I really like you, why what girl around here doesn't." She said and rested her arms on Benny's shoulders flirting with him.

"I didn't know that plenty of girls liked me. You must have been misinformed. Anyway, I'm sorry but I don't see where my friends were coming from with thinking this is okay. They know how I feel." Benny said calm but his cheeks were heating up because she was very close to him and the only other girl he knew was Maya. He only had his first kiss the other day.

"It's only right man, she won't be at the sandlot to distract you and we will help you by playing earlier. You can have everything you want!" Ham said proudly.

"Yea everything you want." Abigail said and leaned in but Benny pulled away.

"Benny!" Maya said throwing her glove at him.

Everyone stopped because they were shocked that Maya had arrived early. They thought they had more time. Benny actually didn't know what to think.

"What is going on?" Maya said. Benny let out a sigh of relief that she didn't run away and maybe she would let him explain.

"Benny has a new girlfriend! It's better now because we can all be friends. And Maya you can be friends with us too because Benny wont be kissing Abigail at the sandlot because she doesn't like sports. Especially baseball. So you won't get hurt." Squints said and patted himself on the back for his mastermind idea. Benny face palmed himself because of Squints. He stole Benny's time to explain.

"Yea, well hope this hurts." Maya said and chucked her baseball at Benny and he winced as it hit him in the gut.

As it rolled to his feet he noticed it had writing on it. He picked it up and saw it was signed by the 1927 Yankees team.

"Hope you like it! It was a gift for all of you. Especially you Benny, because I liked you sooooo much." Maya said mockingly and as sarcastic as possible before walking away.
