"Why not?" Maya asked curiously.

"You could get killed!" Squints expressed.

"By the BEAST!" Smalls said as if this was once newfound knowledge to him.

"Oh come on, you guys. A beast doesn't exist. I've lived here all my life and never heard of no such thing." Maya rolled her eyes at the immaturity.

"You also never heard of any of us. But you've lived here all your life and we have always existed. Are you saying we don't exist?" Benny spoke.

"I'm saying there is no such thing as a beast. I could get your ball from across the fence so we can play." Maya said digging her foot into the fence in an attempt to hoist herself up but Benny grabbed her waist and pulled her off the fence.

"What are you doing?! Do you want to get yourself killed!" Benny said still holding onto Maya tightly. He was angry at her for putting herself in danger.

"I know what we need." Ham smiled and all the boys smiled too.

"CAMP OUTTTTT!" They all yelled and ran into the tree fort. Benny took Maya's hand and dragged her along as well.

"You need to hear this." Benny said and looked at her like a kid looks at an ice cream sundae before helping her up the tree and into their clubhouse.

"WOAH! Benny first the sandlot now the tree house!" Yeah, yeah growled.

"This story will take all night. Hit it Squints." Benny said and took a seat next to Maya which made him really nervous inside. He wanted to put his arm around her but he figured it would be too much. He wasn't even sure if sitting next to her wouldn't freak her out.

Squints told the infamous story and finally Maya believed there was the beast.

Or maybe she just agreed there really was a beast to shut us all up.

About six s'mores later the sandlot boys fell asleep with their sleeping bags they always stored from their occasional campouts. Since Maya wasn't really part of the group she didn't have any blankets. Benny took it upon himself to cut his sleeping bag in half with his Swiss army knife so it wasn't a sleeping bag anymore it was just a really big blanket big enough for three people.

Maya was thankful for Benny being such a great friend.

Benny didn't sleep at all that night because he couldn't believe such a great girl was just an arms length away. He really liked her and he liked her ripped jeans and baseball tees. Her confidence and the fact they shared so much in common. Where would Benny ever find another girl like her? He wished there wasn't a million and one things he loved about her so he could stop thinking about them and fall asleep. Everyone else in the treehouse was sleeping.

~~~~~~~~
It was now morning and Benny somehow finding himself opening his eyes he never knew shut. But know a couple of the boys were now up while Maya still slept.
Benny's face flushed red when Maya rolled over still asleep and cuddled Benny's chest. He had never been this close to any girl but it was even more insane because he had deep feelings for Maya.
Benny wanted to jump up so none of the guys would tease him again but another part of him wanted to play with her hair and wrap his arm around her shoulders keeping her resting peacefully on his chest.
He took her soft blond hair and combed it through his fingers repeatedly and gently to make sure not to wake her up. He admired her breathing softly on his chest and he slowly let his arm rest over her waist were it fit perfectly as they both rested there.
Benny suddenly felt like he could fall asleep so easily.
