Chapter 33

Late at night, a mysterious figure feeds a rat to the walkers at the prison fence.

Back in Cell Block D, a zombified Patrick enters a cell and kills the man sleeping inside. After Patrick feeds on him, the man reanimates.

Michonne goes to hunt for The Governor while Rick and Carl head out to tend to the pigs. Carl asks if he can help clear the walkers at the fence, but Rick shuts the idea down. Carl apologizes but asks for his gun back.

They hear gunshots and see Mika and Lizzie Samuels run out of Cell Block D, screaming for help. A horde of walkers has attacked from within and has killed several people.

Michonne, trapped at the prison gates with two walkers, falls over a snare and is nearly overpowered before being rescued by Carl and Maggie.

Inside the cell block, Ava, Daryl and the other original member's clear out the remaining walkers, among them Patrick. They discover and eliminate another bloody-eyed walker, Charlie, in a locked cell. After finding no bites or scratches on his corpse, Dr. Subramanian the doctor that came from Woodbury, recognizes the blood pouring out of Charlie's orifices as an indicator of disease, and they link Charlie's sickness with Patrick's similar bleeding. When informed by Rick of the death of Violet the pig and a sick boar discovered in the woods, Hershel notes that, pre-apocalypse, some diseases were spread by pigs and birds. They conclude that everyone in the cell block could be infected by an aggressive strain of the flu.

As Carl and Maggie carry Michonne back inside, Rick approaches them and warns them to stay away from him and anyone else who may have been exposed, due to the risk of infection.

Ava's P. O. V

I had been sick nearly all morning, which was NOT fun considering I had been fine a few days ago. "Argh" I moan as I stand up from the ground "are you ok?" I hear from behind me, I turn to Maggie and I nod "yea, I'm fine just a bit under the weather, thought ya went inside" "I did but saw you over here throwing your guts up, why don't you get something for you eat you might feel better, there's still some left over veal stew inside" and for some reason just the thought of veal made me dry reach and yellow bile spewed to the ground "ahh fuck that stings my throat" I goan out as she kneels down beside "I thought you like veal? You ate quite a bit the other day an" I suddenly cut her off "oh shit" I whisper out "what?" "I was just like this when I" I took a big gulp of fresh air "when you what?" I looked at her "when I was pregnant with Hunter" I say with a smile, Maggie looked shocked for a few seconds before she smiled back at me "really? You sure?" "I'm quite sure, do you have any more tests? Mags?" I question her "yeah I do, come on let's get you inside and get you some water then I will give you a test" she said helping me up off the ground and we walked back inside the prison.

~~~Third Persons View~~~

Carol tends to Ryan, who was bitten during the attack. Realizing he is dying, he asks Carol to take care of his daughters, Lizzie and Mika for him as if they were her own, which Carol promises to do. Lizzie and Mika say goodbye to their dying dad; Lizzie volunteers to stab him in the head to prevent his reanimating but is unable to do so, leaving Carol to do the deed herself.

The council begins quarantining those known to be sick, including Karen and another prison inhabitant, her and Tyreese's friend, David. Carol goes to talk to Mika and Lizzie as they stand by the fence. She bluntly tells Lizzie that she is weak, and in this world she cannot be. Lizzie begins crying that, "They killed him," referring to Nick the walker she had named. Lizzie runs away and Mika explains that Lizzie is not weak but, "messed up."

Beth wraps Michonne's ankle as the two discuss the group's losses. Beth muses about what to call a parent who has lost a child, as there is no word equivalent to "widow" or "orphan"; Michonne begins to tear up but composes herself before Beth notices. Beth later asks Michonne to watch Judith, despite Michonne's reluctance. Once left alone with the baby, Michonne breaks down and weeps while holding Judith close.

Ava's P. O. V

"Do you think it will tell you?" Maggie asked me as we waited for the test "only if I'm at least a couple of weeks" "do you want to have another child?" She asked me, I knew what she meant by that she was starting to worry about me cause of what happened to Lori "yah I actually do, but this time I would love to have a little girl" I say with a smile crossing my lips "don't worry Mags" I continue as I place my hand on her shoulder "I had Hunter naturally" "times up" she says looking at the test she smiled at me "Am I?" "Yes!" We both smile as she hugs me, and I start to cry tears of happiness "keep this between us for now k, Mags" "yeah of course, how do you think Daryl and Hunter will react?" "Well I'm not sure bout Daryl, I would say be would be happy, but worried at the same time, Hunter on the other hand I would say he would be happy he has always wanted a younger brother or sister" I say back to her, we then walk down towards eating area but I'm stopped by Hershel "Ava, can I speak to you dear, privately" I give him a confused look but nodded anyway "yah sure" he then leads me to a area where no one can hear us "ok Ava, now don't worry, but it's Hunter" I cut him off "Hunter?, what's wrong with him?, where is he?" I ask panicked "you've heard about this sickness?" "Oh God......No" I sob out.

~~~Third Persons View~~~

As the survivors bury the dead, a massive group of walkers converges at a single portion of the fence. Sasha points out the carcasses of several dead rats at the fence, suggesting that someone has been feeding the walkers, which lures them in and causes them to cluster together instead of spreading out.

Despite the survivors' efforts to clear them, the walkers' combined mass causes the fence to begin to give way. Rick decides to sacrifice the piglets and uses them to successfully lure the walkers away from the fence. The plan seems to take an emotional toll on Rick.

Meanwhile, the prison group is able to secure the fence with tree trunks.

Carol again finds Lizzie and Mika near the fence looking at walkers. Carol warns Lizzie not to identify with the walkers, but instead to take the time to grieve for, and let go of, her father. Lizzie takes her knife, which Carol used to stab Lizzie's father to prevent reanimation; from Carol's hand and puts it in her belt.

Carl reveals Carol's weapons teachings to his father, asking that he not confront her about it. Rick complies, then returns Carl's gun and once again begins to carry his own. Tyreese visits Karen's isolated cell with flowers, only to find it empty, with a blood trail that leads outside. Once outside he was met with the gruesome sight of Karen and David's dead and burnt bodies outside of Cell Block B.

Ava's P. O. V

I went straight to the other cell block where they were putting the sick, to see Hunter "Hunter" I sob out as I see him I give him a hug "it's OK mom, I'll be fine" he says back to me while hugging me back "oh Hunter, I'm so sorry" "sorry?" He questions me "I should have been protecting you, but I've done not" he cuts me off "mom, it's OK, Hershel will be looking after me I'm in the best capable hands, plus you couldn't have protected me from something ya can't control, ya know that" I just nodded but continued to cry into his shoulder "where's dad?, does he know?" I shake my head then slightly pull away from him "n-no he doesn't I haven't seen him since this morning" "please go and tell him mom, I want to see him before we ain't allowed to see anyone" "o-ok Hunt, but ya be strong ok,  be strong just like ya father" he just smiled at me "ya know I will mom" "I love you Hunter" "I love you to mom" then at the same time we both said "like the ocean" I then gave him a gentle kiss on the forehead before leaving.
