"Have a great first day! I love you!" Josh called, placing a kiss to my cheek as he dashed out of the room.
"I love you, too!" I called back. I heard the front door slam shut behind him. I went back to assessing my appearance in the mirror. It felt like I'd been standing there for hours, though it was probably closer to 5 minutes.
I was so afraid of making a fool out of myself on my first day. I knew that I was going to be dealing with customers, so I didn't want to look like a complete idiot.
I checked my phone for the time. I read the numbers and darted out of the room. I had to be at the store in 3 minutes. Luckily, it was only a few blocks away. I locked the door behind me and ran down the stairs. When I walked outside, the thick summer air engulfed me. I slowed my pace so that I wouldn't be out of breath when I got there.
When I reached the store, I walked in with a smile on my face. I went to the office I'd been interviewed in and knocked. It opened and Greg smiled at me.
"Hey, Tyler! Nice to see you again. I'm excited to have you joining us."
"I'm excited to start working," I replied. Greg laughed and led me around the store.
"I'm glad to hear. Now, I'd like you to meet the rest of the staff." We walked to the back area and I saw a girl organizing music books. "Maggie, this is Tyler. Tyler, this is Maggie. She's the junior manager here. So, if you need anything, and I'm not here, she's the person to go to." She smiled and held out her hand. I shook it happily.
"It's nice to meet you," I said.
"You too." Greg led me the other way to the front. As we approached the counter, my heart stopped. Standing at the cash register was the last person I wanted to see. He was smiling down at a piece of paper.
"Tyler, this is Brendon. Brendon, this is Tyler." Brendon looked up from what he was doing and his smile disappeared. Though, it quickly was there again.
"It's nice to meet you," he said. I just stared at him.
"Mhm," I said. I noticed Greg give me a confused look, so I played along. I smiled again and shook his outstretched hand. Brendon must've noticed the way I was shaking because he laughed. I wiped my hand on my jeans when I pulled away.
"Our other three employees, Chad, Dallon, and Frank, aren't working today, so you'll meet them another time."
Great. Dallon and Brendon. I thought.
"Okay. That's fine."
"Super! Now, you're going to be working the cash register next to Brendon."
"Great," I said, trying to keep all sarcasm out of my voice. Greg nodded and wished me luck before walking away. I sighed and rubbed my temple.
C'mon, Tyler. You can get through this.
I walked back over to the counter and stepped behind it. Brendon looked up from what he was doing on that paper and pushed it out of my sight.
"Tyler," he said.
"Brendon." He stood there a moment, just looking at me. I could feel myself blush under his strong gaze. "Can I help you?"
"No," he said, looking away. "It's just, y'know, been a while." I furrowed my eyebrows at his words.
"Yea, it has. And, if I remember correctly, it wasn't on great terms." I turned away from him and brought my attention to the desk in front of me.
"Look, Tyler, I, uh, I'm sorry." I couldn't believe that he had actually just apologized to me.
"I'm not the one you need to apologize to," I said, calmly, not looking at him. "It's Josh."
"I know," he sighed. "How is he?"
"Good." I straightened up the pens and papers in front of me.
"That's good." I could feel his eyes on me again. "Are you, um, are you guys-"
"Yea." I looked at him and he nodded.
"That's nice. I'm happy for you guys." I let my confusion spread to my face. How could he be so different?
"Thanks?" I turned back to the things I was organizing. I heard him sigh and snuck a glance to see him back to writing on that paper. I felt my phone vibrate and pulled it out.
Jish: Hey! How's work so far?
Tyyy:Pretty good. I'll tell you all about it at dinner
Jish: Alright, babe. See ya then ❤️
Tyyy: ❤️I smiled as I slid my phone back into my pocket. A bell chimed and I saw a couple walk in. I greeted them and they smiled before going back into the store.
"Hey, Brendon?"
"Yea?"
"Are you gonna show me how to work this thing?" I asked, gesturing to the machine in front of me.
"Oh, yea. Sorry," he laughed. He folded the paper and put it in his jacket pocket before helping me.
