Tyler's POV

I walked out of the music shop and answered the phone that was vibrating in my pocket. I began walking as I talked.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Tyler!" the cheerful voice said. I smiled before responding.

"Hey, Laura! Is everything okay?"

"Yes, Tyler." I smiled at the way she always said my name when she spoke to me. "Everything is all set for tonight. I was just checking to see what time you guys will be coming over."

"Hopefully we'll leave here soon. It's a 45 minute drive so..." I paused, doing the math in my head. "We should get there around 6."

"Alright, great! We'll see you then!"

"See you then. Goodbye!"

"Goodbye, Tyler." She hung up and I slid my phone back into my pocket. I opened the door to our apartment building and got up the steps swiftly. When I unlocked the apartment door, Josh was in the kitchen. He turned to face me with a huge smile on his face. I looked him up and down and smiled.

He was wearing a white and black plaid button up and black jeans. He had a SnapBack on his head backwards. Some fading pink hair was poking out over his forehead.

"Hey, birthday boy!" I said, walking over. I held his face in my hands and pulled our lips together. He smiled into the kiss, causing me to do the same. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled our bodies closer together. My hands moved to be across his shoulders. He pulled away and kissed my nose.

"Was that my present?" he asked, laughing.

"Oh, no! You'll be getting much more than that!" I said, winking. He laughed and kissed me again, shorter this time. I blushed as he pulled away. "Are you ready to go?" I asked.

"Are you gonna change?" I looked down at the white shirt I had worn to work. There was dust from old records and sauce from the burrito I had for lunch on it.

"Yes! Thank you!" I pulled my shirt off over my head as I walked into the bedroom. I rummaged through my closet for a moment before pulling out something I liked. I put on a black t-shirt and a blue button up. Unlike Josh, I left mine unbuttoned. I fixed my hair in the mirror before leading us out to Josh's car. I pulled out my phone to text Momma Dun that we were leaving.

As he drove, I played random songs from his Spotify. The song Heart Out by The 1975 came on and I saw him smile. He turned the volume knob. We rolled down the windows and let the summer breeze bathe us.

Rushing in a small town
I forgot to call you
I'm running low on know how
This beat's made for two

I smiled at the way Josh smiled. He was a year older. He was 19. We were so young and vulnerable to the world. So young and careless.

I rested my elbow on the window and looked out it. The cool air felt nice on my hot skin.

It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out?
It's just you and I tonight
Why don't you figure my heart out?

We pulled into his driveway and memories flooded my head. I remembered going to his house after school and making out in his garage. I remembered playing songs for him on his mother's piano. I remembered talking about anything and everything while studying for tests that didn't matter.

He knocked on the door and I tried to hold back a smile. I was proud of myself for not letting anything slip.

Josh thought that we were just having a small dinner with his family. He didn't know that I'd arranged for both of our families and all of our friends to come over for a surprise party.

"Hey, boys!" Laura said, smiling. She pulled each of us into a hug before leading us inside. As I closed the front door behind me, everyone popped out and shouted "Surprise!" I watched Josh's face change from surprise, to confusion, to happiness.

"Are you kidding me?" he asked, laughing. "How long have you guys been planning this?"

"Well, Tyler told me about the idea before you graduated." Laura said. Josh turned to me with raised eyebrows.

"Seriously?"

"Maybe," I said. He pulled me into his arms and kissed my lips. We kept it short since everyone we knew was there. People said "aww" and I laughed.

Everyone told Josh happy birthday and gave him hugs. I found my parents and said hi to them. I hadn't realized how much I missed my mom until I hugged her. I didn't want to pull away, but I did. We caught each other up on anything we hadn't already talked on the phone about.

"There he is!" I turned and laughed at Patrick. He pulled me into a hug before ruffling my hair. "So, how's working with you-know-who?"

"Eh," I said, shrugging. Brendon usually minds his own business. Dallon's friendly."

"I can't believe it," he breathed, shaking his head. "It's like he's a completely different person."

"Exactly!" I saw Josh walk up to us. He wrapped and arm around my waist and joined our conversation.

"Cake time!" Jordan shouted. We all wandered into the kitchen where Josh's parents were lighting the candles on his cake. All 19 of them.

Happy birthday to you

"CHA CHA CHA," Jay shouted. A few people laughed.

Happy birthday to you

"CHA CHA CHA." This time, Jordan joined in.

Happy birthday dear Joshua
Happy birthday to you

He closed his eyes lightly for a moment before blowing out the candles. He smiled around at everyone as his father began cutting pieces.
