Alex's POV
I waited for Annie's shocked expression, and felt greatly confused when it didn't come. She just stood on the sidewalk blinking and then asked, "Would you mind if we took a walk?" Her gorgeous blue eyes looked at me expectantly.
"Uh... sure, if you want to." I didn't know what else to say, I never had anyone react to this kind of news the way Annie was; and honestly I didn't know how to take her. I mean was this the calm before the storm? I really was thankful though, women and tears were a very uncomfortable mixture for me.
We walked along side each other for awhile, just enjoying the beauty of the early autumn leaves. Finally when I thought I would die from the suspense, of not knowing what she was thinking she turned to me, " I have one question, why didn't you go back to Atlanta yesterday?" Again she caught me off guard.
" It was late, so I decided to stay. I was actually fixing to leave the hotel, when I received the call from Fred." I replied simply. I wasn't about to question her logic, even if I couldn't understand it. Every patient that I've ever had, always had a million questions;all regarding their disease.
Her face flushed slightly, giving her a beautiful glow. " I just thought, oh never mind it was silly." Her voice coming out just above a whisper. She started walking again in hopes I would drop it, but I didn't back down that easily; there was defiantly something on her mind.
I grabbed her wrist gently, making her stop yet again. She was looking at the ground, so I brought my other free hand up and cupped her chin, till her eyes met mine. I couldn't understand what was happening to me. I swear it felt like electric currents were passing from her body to mine, or vice versa. Whatever it was, was kind of freaking me out.
"Annie what are you thinking?" I asked quietly, one small tear trickled down her left cheek, and before I knew it my hand reached up to wipe it away. Her breath hitched, as she pulled away from me.
" I just thought maybe you stayed for me..." She let her voice trail off. I could feel myself grinning at this, because the truth was just that; I had stayed for her! She on the other hand, looked as though she wanted nothing more than to fall into a giant hole.
" Well, You may have been part of the reason I decided to stay one more day." I knew it was wrong to tease her this way, I just couldn't help it; her face was priceless. She started walking again, and I fell in step beside her.
" Didn't your mother or father ever tell you how wrong it is, to take pleasure in other peoples misery?" She asked grinning back at me. After that we both just laughed and talked all the way to the park. Annie was just as I thought she was funny, smart, and generally a wonderful person all around.
Annie's POV
We walked in a comfortable silence for a long time, I had to admit my heart was breaking over the news Alex told me this morning. However, I refused to show it! I was not about to look at this as though it was the end, but a new beginning that God had led me to.
We had been walking for so long; that we ended up at a park that was almost two miles from my apartment. "Can I ask you a question Annie?" Alex looked at me solemly , we made our way over to a swing set. " Sure ask me anything." I replied honestly.
