DANIELS P.O.V

----------AT THE DOCTORS----------

"My head hurts,"'Emily whimpered leaning into my chest.

We were sitting in the doctors waiting room, waiting to be seen.

"It's ok baby," I said stroking her hair.

"Miss Thorne?" A young female doctor called out.

I stood up and lent out my hand for Emily to grab; and I helped her stand. We walked into the doctors room and both sat down in the chairs.

"What seems to be the problem Miss Thorne," the doctor asked.
"Everything hurts and I just feels so sick," she said cuddling into my chest.
"What do you mean by that dear?" She asked in a gentle voice.
"This morning she was quite hot and clammy and she hasn't really improved," I said. "She has been constantly sick so we think it might be the flu."
"And how many weeks pregnant are you?" She asked Emily.
"16," she replied.
"Let's take a look at you," she said moving over to Emily.

She looked down her throat and in her ears. She also listened to her heart beat.

"Miss Thorne, you do have the flu but if you don't mind I'd like to take your blood pressure, because I am worried there is something else going on," the nurse said.

Emily nodded and moved her sleeve up her arm so the doctor could take her blood pressure. After she was done She turned back to us and looked me dead in the eye.

"If you don't mind, I'd like to get a prenatal doctor to take a look at you quickly," she said turning to Em.
"Is everything ok?" Emily asked.
"Your blood pressure is high, I just want to make sure everything is ok," she said giving us a small smile.

Em moved into my chest and another doctor walked in.

"Hi Miss Thorne, I'm doctor Lei," he said.
"Hi," Emily said moving off my chest a little.

He retook her blood pressure and his smile dropped when he looked at it. He tapped lightly on her stomach and listened carefully to see if the baby made any movement.

"Miss Thorne," he said slowly.

He didn't have a smile on his face and the tone in his voice warned us that we weren't going to like what her said next.

"I'm afraid you have preeclampsia," he said.
"What's that?" I asked grabbing Emily's hand.
"Your liver isn't functioning properly because of the baby. Your body is not absorbing the proteins and that is why you are sick," he said.
"How does this affect the baby?" Emily asked rubbing her stomach.
"Because there is limited protein being absorbed, your blood pressure rises. If you are in a stressful or difficult situation it can develop into eclampsia, which results in seizures and can be fatal," he said.

I looked down at Emily who had tears stinging her eyes.

"Shh," I said stroking her forehead and holding back tears of my own.
"I'm afraid there is no treatment," the doctor said which caused a tear to slide down my cheek.
"But what can we do to prevent eclampsia?" I asked.
"I don't want you to work at all, until the baby is born," the doctor started. "You need to rest, and sleep, also don't panic because this causes blood pressure to rise even more. Avoids situations where you are worried or panicked about anything," the doctor said.
"That's it?" I asked.
"I'm afraid there is nothing else we can do except if you have a voluntary abortion," the doctor said.

Emily shook her head straight away.

"That's not going to happen," she said through tears.
"Alright let's go," I said standing up.

I helped Emily stand and wiped her eyes.

"Thank you doctor," I said shaking his hand.
"I'm sorry I only delivered bad news. However good luck with the baby," he said giving us a small smile.
"Thank you," I said placing my hand behind Emilys back and guiding her out of the room.

We walked back to the car and once she had sat down she burst into tears.

"Hey baby," I said pulling her towards me.
"Th-the b-b-baby," she said sobbing.
"I know honey, but that's out of control," I said.
"W-what if I-it g-gets s-s-sick," she said crying into my chest.
"You need to calm down, you heard what the doctor said. Stop panicking, I'm sure everything will turn out fine," I said rubbing her back.
"Let's just go home," she said wiping her eyes.

----------BACK AT THE HOUSE------------

MARIES P.O.V

I had just finished vacuuming when Emily and Daniel walked in. Emily was in an absolute state and had tears pouring down her cheeks.

"Are you ok love?" I asked gently touching her arm.

She shook her head and when I opened my arms to hug her she fell into my shoulder and cried even harder.

"What happened?" I asked stroking the back of her hair.

She tried talking but I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She looked up at me.

"It's preeclampsia," she said before moving her head to cry into my top again.
"Oh sweetheart," I said rubbing her back. "You know it's not your fault, don't you?" I asked.

She nodded her head and wiped her eyes.

"I'm sorry, for just bursting in and balling my eyes out," she said.
"Sweetie, don't say sorry. That isn't a nice thing to be told," I said.

She nodded her head again and sat down on the couch. I moved over next to her and she snuggled into my shoulder.

"Can you give us a moment?" I asked Daniel who was standing over in the corner watching us.
"I'm going to take a shower," he said walking towards the bathroom.

I turned back to Emily.

"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked.
"I don't think there is anything to talk about," she said. "I just don't understand why this had to happen to us."
"I know it seems unfair love, but sometimes these things just happen. All you need to focus on now, is staying healthy and keeping the baby healthy," I said as she laid down and put her head on my lap.
"Yeah, I know," she said.

We sat in silence for a while and when I looked down I discovered that she had fallen asleep. She looked so peaceful and it saddened me knowing that the two of them had to face some tough roads ahead.

I had finished in the shower and dried my hair off. I put on a clean shirt and shirts and I made my way back out into the lounge. Emily was fast asleep, with her head on Nan's lap.

"It'll be ok Daniel," nan said.
"I hope so," I replied.
"She is stronger than both of you know and she is trying so hard for this baby," she said stroking the hair off Ems face.
"I know she is, I see how hard she is fighting every time I look at her. I just hope that in the end everything works out," I said.
"You need to be strong, because the stronger you appear for her, the harder she is going to fight," she said.
"Thanks nan," I said sitting down next to her.
"It's my job," she said smiling.

Emily stirred awake and opened her eyes.

"Go back to sleep love," nan said stroking her forehead.

I gave her a small smile and grabbed her hand as she closed her eyes. Moments later she was dreaming again.
