"Babe,"

"Yeah?" Aphmau answered.

Garroth looked at her seriously.  "Can I ask you a question?"

"Anything."

"So when we got attacked, how did you know so much about shadow Knights?"

Aphmau sighed.  She didn't want to get anywhere near this subject.  "Okay so, about a year ago, I was doing a job for this lazy ass mercenary."

"Uh huh."

"And I was going to get paid double for it, so I was like. 'Sure, it's only the nether in and out.'  So I needed to get them a bunch of stuff for potions like ghast tears, nether warts, things like that."

She took a pause to breath.

"Basically I encountered these 'people' that I thought were just people but, they were actually,"

"Shadow Knights." Garroth finished her sentence.

"Exactly. The immortal ones too.  They kicked my ass and I ended up in a cell.  The person next to me was a shadow knight.  A traitor.  He helped humans escape.  I can't seem to think of her name."

Garroth kept his eyes on Aphmau, who was not quite done with her story yet.

"Bet he told me all about them, the prematures, the immortal shadow Knights, the shadow lord.  Basically everything."

She sighed.  "So, when the shadow lord went to go do his 'kill her or let her go' judgement, he just smiled at me and said, "Let her go.  She's always welcome here.  I never thought I'd see her face again." Then I got the hell out of there with all my stuff."

"Wow." Garroth said. "That's really weird.  And lucky.  I can't believe he just let you go."

"I didn't really know why he said what he said.  That's was my very first time in the nether."

Garroth shrugged.  "Well.  You're just a good luck charm aren't you?"

Aphmau couldn't answer.  She just smiled.  She straddled Garroth's hips, facing him.  She pulled him into a long kids before wrapping her arms around him.

He kissed her head and he did the same. He smiled, wondering how lucky he had gotten.

"Laurnace isn't a full shadow knight though.  Something prevented him from turning fully."

"Go talk to him." Garroth told her.

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"I love you."

"I love you too.  Now go ahead."

•••

"Can we talk?"

"Yeah. What's up?" Laurance says quietly, leaning against a wall.

"It's about you being....."

"A shadow Knight?" He finishes her sentence.

Aphmau nodded, trying not to make the moment awkward.  Shadow knights weren't something that were casually talked about.

"Let's go to the guard tower. It's better to talk there."

They got there, not really saying each other.

"What do you want to know? Laurnace said, closing the door behind him.

"I know you're not a full shadow knight.  What prevented you from turning?" Aphmau asked, straight to the point.

He sighed.  "There is or was, I don't know.  There was I guess, this girl and, as cheesy as it sounds, I love her.  And I she was the only thing that really kept me from turning."

"I see.  Does she love you back?"

He shrugged.  "She didn't stick around long enough for me to figure that out. She just left after a while."

"Oh. What was her name?" Aphmau asked curiously.

A blush crept to Laurnace's face. "Her name is Lucinda."

"That's a pretty name." Aphmau commented, as if she didn't already know who Lucinda was.

"Yeah. It is."

Laurance sighed.  "Is that all you wanted to know?"

"What are you doing here in Phoenix Drop anyway?"

"Meeting up with an old friend."

Aphmau nodded walking out.  She thanked him, walking out of the guard tower and back to Garroth.

•••

"I think we should go back tomorrow."

"I think we should." Aphmau agreed.  If they were gone for too long Garte would expect something.

Garroth hugged Aphmau from behind, she smiled, slightly leaning on him.

He buried his face in the crook of her neck.  " I don't want to go." His voice sounded sad and muffled.

"I don't either.  But we both have responsibilities." Aphmau said lamely.

"You're right.  Back to reality it is."

So they left, back to O'khasis and to the thieves guild.

And no one suspected a thing.
