As the weeks slowly drifted by, Connie's symptoms eased from the pregnancy and she found she was able to carry out most tasks with some normality. Sam remained protective at work wanting to keep a watchful eye over her and it became a problem for Connie.
"Look Sam I'm fine, just back off!" "Connie this isn't just about you now, I don't want anything happening to our baby." She scoffed glaring at him as she folded her arms across her chest. "What are trying to imply?" "Noth-" "That I'd hurt our baby intentionally, that I'd do something stupid to put my baby at risk!?" "No Con, you know that's not what I meant."
Rolling her eyes she threw the folder down onto her desk before walking past him and out of her door. "Connie-" "No Sam. Go back to your own department and leave me to do my job." Turning away one final time she walked into cubicles as Charlie slowly came to a stop beside him. "I'll talk to her..." "Thank you." He smiled sadly before disappearing upstairs.
It was no longer a secret that she was indeed having a baby, it had been difficult to hide with her constant mood swings and sickness so she stopped hiding it. The gossip hadn't stopped but Connie had adapted to hearing things about herself. "Charlie if you're here to carry on what he started I wouldn't bother." "No. Merely here to see if a friend is okay."
Connie slowly let a small smile creep onto her face before it turned sour. "I don't know if he realises what he's doing. Marrying me, having another child with me. He has no idea Charlie." He placed a warm hand to her arm as she sighed rubbing a hand across her forehead. "Oh I'm sure he knows you well enough Beauchamp."
Shaking her head she laughed looking around slightly. "But have I taken on too much? A wedding, a baby, a relationship in general..." "You regret everything with Sam?" "What!? No, god I could never regret this but... I just... Maybe we shouldn't have committed like this so quickly. Another child will change so much, it could push us apart-" "Or bring you closer together."
Releasing a breath she looked down at the floor with a gentle nod. "I guess..." Lowering a hand to her side she frowned in pain before rubbing her growing bump in attempt to supress the strain she felt. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine, it's nothing." He was unsure whether to believe her or not but knew she would say no more on the matter. "I best get back-" "As long as you promise to take a break in an hour-" "Yes Mother."
He smirked as she strolled off with a roll of her eyes getting on with what she did best. Shutting the world out of her personal life and treating patients. When Charlie hadn't seen her for a long time, he wandered through the department in search of her. He looked about before hearing gentle laugh from a cubicle.
Glancing around the curtain he saw Connie standing at the bedside of a young girl. "All better... See, not all us doctors are scary." The young girl smiled with another laugh before Connie caught Charlie watching her. "I'll get you some special medicine written up and then your Mum can get you home." Smiling she walked away before raising a brow to Charlie. "Was just making sure you were okay-" "Hmm, I'm sure you were Mr Fairhead."
After getting what she needed, she took Charlie's advice and headed for a break. Rather than go to her own office she took a seat in the small nurses' office. Charlie joined her after finishing in resus, sitting at his desk as he watched Connie laying on the sofa. "You look exhausted-" "I'm fine, just a little worn out."
He nodded watching her with a knowing smile as she complained with a huff. "Have you spoken to Sam?" "Why would I?" "You were pretty harsh earlier." Connie swung her legs round off the sofa and rested her head in her hands. "I just don't need him constantly hanging over me Charlie, god I have enough of that with you down here!" He smiled as she relaxed back enjoying the peacefulness of his office.
