>>Shay's POV<<
I watched as my breath blew misty in the bitter weather of this December night. Christmas was all around, there were vibrant lights wrapped around every single tree I could see, there was a marching band performing Jingle Bells on the street and, yep, you guessed it, my Mom was already planning Christmas dinner.
"So, I'm thinking, should the turkey be stuffed with stuffing or pepper this year?" She asked, watching her boots indent the snow as she took a step forward.
I took a deep breath. "Why on Earth would we stuff the turkey with peppers?"
She furrowed her eyebrows, looking at me. "Are you serious? I think pepper-stuffed turkey is the best combo ever."
I chuckled, pulling up my jeans. "Sounds gross."
"Yeah, well, it isn't." She smiled. "I was also wondering when we should have the dinner. I'm thinking around 4?"
"Let's just have it the time we always have." I shrugged my shoulders, bringing my yellow bag with me.
"Alright, 4 it is, then."
I had been thinking about coming out to my Mom. I had a really, really bad feeling about this. She had always told me as a little girl that God only wanted man and woman to have sexual relations. So, that obviously means she won't accept me.
Well, she's going to have to, otherwise she'll lose her only daughter.
"Um...Mom?" I asked her,
"Yes?" She looked at me.
"I..." Maybe this wasn't a good idea. Maybe I should wait. "I.. uh... You know what? I-It doesn't matter."
"No, honey." She stopped walking at took my hands into hers. "You can tell me."
"No, honestly, it's just... " I thought, swallowing my fears. "I- I just wanted to know what time dad would be home, b-but then I remembered..."
"Honey, you don't have to feel like he's never going to come home." She started walking again. "He's a big boy." She punched my arm playfully.
I tried to smile but I couldn't. My dad has been training as a soldier for almost all of my life. Why did I say that? Why did I have to cover up for something so stupid?
I hate reminding myself of my father. It gives me more reason to worry and I question why he came into my mind at that time and - ugh, it gets confusing. So, I just whimpered a quiet, "I know."
My mom sighed. "It's so cold out." She shivered. "I'd tell your dad to pre heat the house if he was home."
I looked to the floor. "Yeah."
"Or - I'd tell him to get started on the dinner." She laughed.
"I thought we were eating out."
"Well in that case, I'd make him pay." Laughs fell from her lips as I focused on the snowy concrete in front of me.
I sighed. "Let's go to dinner. I'm starving."
