5 times James taught Bret Chemistry and the result of his hard work. XD

5. RESONANCE FORM

"I still can't understand. Please explain again, but more slowly." Bret said.

"I told you, resonance form is an individual Lewis structure of a resonance hybrid." James said impatiently.

"...so what is it for?"

"It's not significant. It just shows that compounds can be represented in many ways, but it's still that one compound."

"..."

James sighed. It was really hard teaching Bret.

"Think of it this way," he started saying. He was searching for a good comparison and luckily, Nadine passed by.

"See Nadine?"

"Yeah?"

"She has many roles like Leah, Iris, Eya and many more but all of them are still Nadine, right?"

"Yeah."

"That's just like resonance forms! Compounds can be drawn differently, but it's still the same compound. That's why we can draw benzene in two different ways, but still, it's just benzene."

"...because it's just a representation." Bret said.

"Exactly!"

4. ELECTRONEGATIVITY

"Electronegativity is the ability of atom to attract electrons in a covalent bond." Bret said.

"That's right!" James said excitedly.

"I don't get it." And James's enthusiasm vanished.

"What don't you get?" he asked.

"Uhmm, everything?"

James sighed.

"As you said, if an atom is electronegative, it can attract electrons."

"And that means?"

"That means the more electronegative an atom is, the higher is its ability to attract electrons..."

"And that's because?"

"That's just it!"

"Sorry! I can't really understand!"

"Why are you hiding behind the chair?"

"You're scary!"

James, once again, sighed.

"Okay, let's put it this way, let's say boys are electrons and girls are atoms. If a girl is beautiful, she would attract boys, right? So the more beautiful the girl, the more they can attract boys. That's the same with atoms, the more they are electronegative, the more they attract electrons. Get it?"

Finally, comprehension dawned on Bret's face.

"Yeah! So in our class, Yassi is the most electronegative!"

"No way, Nadine's definitely more electronegative!"

3. OCTET RULE

"Just remember Bret, in valence, you can violate its number since you can compromise with charges but in octet, you cannot. You must always follow the octet rule."
