Chapter 26: man down

A man, standing a few inches from my face. The only thing stoping our eye contact was a small metal machine, better known as a gun. I froze. The man was wearing all black, as mysterious as I had expected. "Get up!" He ordered. I stood up slowly scared out of my mind. "Take your phone out!" He demanded again. In fear my hands shook as I slowly moved my hand to my pocket.

I took out my phone. "Where's Dan?..." The man asked tightening his grip on the gun. "I don't know" I stuttered panicking. My hands continued to shake as I held the phone out. I knew the if I looked into Panera he would know Dan was in there. "Where is he!" The man shouted again putting the gun to my head. "I don't know..." I cried. "Call him..." The man mumbled. I stood there motionless. Wondering how I could get out of this situation. "Call him!" The man shouted.

My hands shook as I entered the passcode on my phone. I went to contacts working slowly to give the police more time to get here. I clicked Dan's name, searching for the calls button. Call. I put the phone to my ear. I started to pray in my head that he didn't answer. The first ring began, followed by a second. I closed my eyes shaking. I could feel the cold tip of the gun against my forehead.

The phone rang again and again. But luckily Dan didn't answer. It rang about 3 more times before going to voice mail. I took the phone away from my ear. "I'm going to ask you again... Where is Dan?" The ma asked again. I remained silent as I felt myself beginning to cry. I tried to hold back the tears as I closed my eyes again. "Answer me!" The man raised his voice. "I- I wasn't with him..." I lied stuttering. "Tell the truth this time!" He shouted.

"He- he's..." I couldn't get the words it as I shook. I closed my eyes again to scared to answer. "I'm here!" A deeper voice spoke. It was Dan's voice. I flung my eyes open and time slowed down. The gun was no longer aimed at me but at Dan. I began to run forward putting my hands out. I watched as the man began to pull the trigger.

My hands contacted his arm followed by a loud bang, time sped up again. I fell over from the force I had used to push his arm, my hands were pushed back from the force of his arm causing my to land strait on my face. My head began pounding and I kept my eyes closed. Head trauma twice in one week. Great. My eyes were closed and rolled over onto my back.

When my eyes finally opened my head throbs and my vision was spinning. All I could see was Dan and the man clinging onto each other. The man no longer had a gun, Dan drew his hand back throwing it forward into the man's face. The man stumbled back before lunging back forward. He pushed Dan into a table and my vision became blurry enabling me to see what happen next.

When my eyes focused more my head still spun but I could see the man now pinning down Dan. Dan struggled but the man began to punch him multiple times. My vision came in and out as my head pounded. I looked over to my left and realized the gun on the floor. It then hit me. I had to do it. I glanced back down at where Dan was. The man was punching Dan across the face multiple times. I watched as the man moved his hands to Dan's neck.

I wanted to scream but the words didn't come out. I looked back to the left my head still pounding. My vision became blurry once again and a slid me hand up to the gun. My fingertips stumbled upon the gun my hands shook and I finally gained a grip on the gun. I picked it up and weakly and aimed it toward the man. My hand shook. I worried I would hit Dan but he would die if I didn't. I closed my eyes and hit the trigger. Worried the first shot didn't hit him I shot again.

When I opened my eyes the man was gone, Dan was coughing and my hand dropped unable to hold the gun any longer. The man was invisible. I must have hit him. The realization hit me then. I might have killed a man. My vision got blurry and the pounding in my head got worse. I could no longer think strait. Staring up at the sky. Dan's face appeared in front of mine I could see his mouth moving but no words. I could see the worry in his eyes and blood was splattered on his face. Dan's face slowly disappeared.
