Chapter 15: alone together
The next morning I woke up early and decided to just sit down outside on the balcony to think. I sat against the house kind of in the corner, so I was hidden. I looked out at the water and started thinking. I'm sure this will be a place I come often while we are here. I listen to the noise of the waves as they slowly crash at the shoreline.
I hear footsteps from inside, but continue thinking. I hear the door slide open and I am no longer alone. I look up not sure who it is at first. Then I look closer and I realize it was Dan with his Hobbit hair. He was staring out at the view and hadn't noticed me yet. I looked back out at the water so it wouldn't be as awkward once he noticed me there. "Oh... I'm sorry... I didn't know you were out here... Um... I'll go..." He stuttered.
I looked over at him. "No it's fine... You can stay" I say in the most sincere voice possible. Dan fakes a smile looking down. "Ok" he speaks softly. Dan then leaned against the house next to me and slowly slid down the wall into a sitting position. His legs were bent and he wrapped his arms around them hugging them.
I glanced over at him leaning more onto the wall trying to relax. "I'm sorry about all this... I can't help to feel that this is my fault someway..." Dan looks over at me. "No, don't be sorry. This is not your fault" I reply looking into his big brown eyes. "I really want to remember. It's just not there" he looks down. "Don't think of it that way. Everything happens for a reason." I smile at him trying to cheer him up but he continues to look down.
"I just feel so alone. I'm overwhelmed with being surrounded by all these strangers." He tells me looking back up. I didn't know how to respond, considering I felt the same way. "I know how you feel..." I whisper. There was a slight pause. "You do?" He asked. I looked over at him again. "Yea... I mean I know Baylee very well and Lena, but I came her expecting to be with someone I considered family. Not just a few of my friends for the entire summer" I replied getting a bit emotional but I held it all in.
Dan gave me a concerned look. "I want to remember... I really do..." He whispers looking back down. I felt bad for saying anything. I wanted to give him big hug to cheer him up. I just sat still. I felt the tears fill my eyes in confusion and pity. I bent my knees and his my face so Dan wouldn't see.
Just tears but no emotion on my face and no noise. I wouldn't have even considered it crying. I try to think of something to say but can't. "I'm sorry" slips from my lips. Unable to think of anything else to say. "You didn't do anything wrong..." He replies. I stayed quiet. "I'll leave if you want..." Dan adds looking down. "No stay!" I blurt out. I blushed realizing what I had just said. He smirked and hid his head back into his legs.
I started to feel a cool breeze blow through my hair. I never want Dan to leave. Please don't let Dan leave... I don't just mean from here I mean ever. Don't let him walk away and have no chance to remember. Remembering is not technically the key. It's the fact of regaining what you once had.
