~Emily’s POV
The next morning it was back to being up super early to get ready for school. Our alarm went off at 6am and it was still dark out, which made sense because it was still the middle of February. I looked over at my phone on my bed side table. The only problem was it was on Scotty’s side of my bed, hmm. I just decided on lying across him to reach for my phone. He had to get up anyways. I shut the alarm off and woke him up with a quick kiss on the lips. “Com’on time to get up lazy bum.” He didn’t open his eyes but I made him laugh, success. We both lazily got up and went downstairs for cereal and coffee.
S: “Do you think Grant has to come with us to school?”
E: “Good question, but I don’t see why, we have metal detectors, so I think it’s alright.”
It was a good point I guess, but I think it would be funny just to see Grant having to stand in the back of class. We went upstairs to get changed. After what happened between Scotty and I in the loft, I didn’t really bother stepping into my bathroom to change anymore. I picked out my usual outfit of jeans, my favorite blue and gray flannel shirt, and work boots. I grabbed my work boots only because they actually have some tread, unlike cowboy boots. Scotty wore something pretty similar except his flannel was green and blue. Which I might add made his eyes look amazing.
He went outside and started up his truck before we went to leave. I wanted to see if it was actually going to warm up today or not, so I turned on the news. First story “Scotty McCreery to return back to school, just like a normal kid today.” Great, they had to announce everything. I found out the temperature wasn’t supposed to get out of the 20s so I grabbed a sweatshirt. Before getting into Scotty’s truck Grant was coming out his RV in my driveway.
G: “Hey you guys off?”
E: “Yeah did you see the news yet?”
G: “That’s why I’ll meet you two at school, gunna get to stand in the back of all of Scotty’s classes.”
E: “Sounds fun.”
G: “Doesn’t matter if it’s fun or not, it’s how I get paid.”
E: “Okay we gotta get going, see you there.”
I jogged over to Scotty and his truck and slid into his right seat.
E: “So there was a news story about how you’re headed back to school today.”
S: “Really? I don’t see why it’s so important to tell everyone that.”
E: “I don’t either.” I paused thinking about it. “Can we stop by Travis’s memorial on the way to school?”
S: “Yeah good idea, I wanna make sure everything’s still standing.”
We got to the place we had picked out last fall, where my brother had gone off the road and died. Surprisingly everything was still all set up just the same way we had set it all down. I told Scotty to come down because there were a ton of fresh footprints and I needed the flashlight. He jumped out and shut off his truck, bringing a flashlight with him. He shone it on the cross we had made a few months ago. A lot of people must have been down here because there were a lot more things sitting next to the stuff we had left. I looked over at Scotty and I was tearing up, it looked beautiful. Someone had built a little roof over everything to keep it all dry. There were a lot more stuffed animals, his basketball jersey, a sign that said “We will never forget you Travis”, a vase of flowers, that had frozen, and a few other random things. Scotty reached over to me and we stood there hugging. It took all that it had in me to not start crying.
~Scotty’s POV
I tossed my truck keys to Em and I said I’d be right up. I wanted to ask Travis if he would be okay with me marrying his sister. I don’t care if he’s not actually buried here but this spot means a lot to all of us.
I spoke to him like he was actually there, and weirdly the wind blew just a little bit when I was done talking to him. I know he’s listening.
I walked back up to the truck and drove the rest of the way to school. I texted Grant and he said he already has mine and Em’s schedules and that he’d meet us in homeroom. I asked him if he should actually be walking with me, but he said not to worry about that part. He was just going to stand in the back of my classes for the first week or so because of that stupid news story.
Em and I sat down in homeroom in our usual seats, both perfectly on time and no one really turned around or said anything. Good, back to normal. Then of course that feeling of normalcy had to be ruined when our teacher and Grant walked in together. She walked to the front of the room to talk;
Teacher: “First off I want to congratulate Scotty on his recent American Idol win, and introduce all of y’all to Grant.”
We were sitting there both thinking, ‘please don’t say he’s my security guard.’
G: “I’m just going to be here for the next couple of weeks just to ease their transition back to school.”
Phew he didn’t say anything about what he was actually there for. I don’t really know why it bothered me so much, but I thought it was embarrassing to be called out like that. Just then Jennifer, a girl from a different town who we’ve been in homeroom with since freshman year, turned around.
J: To me; “So is that guy like your security guard or something.”
S: “Nah, he was sent by Idol to make sure I get back used to school, and I know how to get to recording studio and stuff like that.” I looked over to Grant who just nodded because he clearly heard my lie. Hopefully he knew that I didn’t want it advertised, about why he’s here.
J: “Oh that’s cool.” She turned around and was just talking with her friends.
Our teacher handed out our schedules and the room got louder as everyone was talking and comparing them like always. Okay so here’s mine and Em’s;
Scotty: Emily:
First Block: Computers Chemistry
Second Block: Nothing English
Third Block: English Nothing
Fourth Block: History History
The music sounded and Grant and I were off to the South wing for the computer labs. Emily was off to the third floor for sciences.
