Chapter 14

Joshua knocked twice on the heavy bronze door.There was no answer.He knocked again and paused, then heard shuffling of feet and some groaning.The huge door swung open,and there stood Bella,with her hair packed up and her mouth turned down.
"So you can knock,"she said in mock surprise."What do you want?"
"I came here to apologize," he said,sticking his hands in his pocket."I shouldn't have called you names.It was not my intention to hurt you."
Bella squinted at him."Are you sure you're at the right house?"
"Come on,Bella,I didn't come here for games."
"Ain't nobody playing games with you,Joshua,"Bella retorted, scowling at him.Then she smiled and said,"You only apologize to someone when they're hurt,quedira,and what you said to me..pfft.. I've been called worse.So,please leave."
"Still,"Joshua said,raising a hand to his chest."I'm sorry,I-"
"Yeah,bye!"She said and slammed the door in his face.
Joshua stood there,frozen,with his hand to his chest and his lips slightly parted.
He was in shock.
He felt like a complete fool, he'd never ever been so badly treated by a female.It angered him,and he poured his fury out on the door.
"Isabella!!Isabella,open this door!Now!"he yelled,banging on the door repeatedly.
Bella's head popped out of the window."What the fuck!Boy,get off my front porch!"
Joshua looked up at her,panting."If you don't open this door right now,Bella,I'll-"
"You'll what,huh?!You'll what!"
"I swear to God,I'll break this door down,Bella!"he growled angrily.
"Do iiiiiit!!!I dare you a thousand times,you idiot!"she shouted.
"Open the goddamned door,Isabella!"he said and kicked the door hard."Shit!"he yelped and jumped backwards on one foot,holding the other in his hands."Shit!Shit!Shit!"
Bella threw her head back and laughed heartily."Did that hurt you,Joshy,huh? Oh,don't look at me like that,the door hurt you not me,"she said,grinning from ear to ear."Karma's a bitch."
Joshua gritted his teeth and glared at her.His face was red with anger.
Breathe,Joshua,breathe.
Four,three,two,one.
Four three,two,one.
Joshua tried to level his breathing.He put his foot down and slowly stood up straight.He began to walk away as gently as he could,and with his shoulders straight.He refused to give her the satisfaction of seeing him limp.
"You should put some ice on that!Haha!"Bella laughed and shut the window.

"Ow!"Joshua yelled and his voice echoed in the quiet house.Curse you,Isabella, he thought,placing the ice pack on his swollen foott.He was sitting on a couch in his condo.His feet hurt like hell.He kept it elevated on the arm of the couch and rested his head on the other end,then closed his eyes and rested an arm on his forehead. His thoughts drifted to Bella.
I lost my virginity through rape.And it was done by the man I adored the most.My father.
He remembered the cold hard look she'd given him before walking out on him.He knew the effects rape had on girls,the insecurity they felt and their fear of men,but Bella didn't seem like she had either of those.In fact,she seemed bold and fearless.Was it all a façade? Was she really torn apart inside?
I might act like a bitch,Joshua,but that's just the part of my character that I show to people I feel deserve it.My public persona is very different from my real character.
He sighed and rolled over to his side.Suddenly,his loud ringtone filled the air.He groaned and dipped his hand in his pocket to bring out the phone.He raised it at arm's length to see the name of the caller.He groaned louder when he saw her name and the picture he'd taken of her while they were dating light up the screen. He chucked the phone back into his pocket.He was not ready for any drama,and for someone so small,Penelope could be extremely melodramatic.The phone rang loudly again and Joshua sat up abruptly.The action caused his swollen foot to hurt and he screamed in pain.
He snatched the phone out of his pocket and pressed the answer button.
"What!"
There was a slight yelp at the other end.Then,"Josh,it's me.I've missed you,my love,"a tiny female voice answered.
Joshua groaned inwardly."What do you want,Penn?"
A cheerful laughter rang in his ears."You remembered my nickname! Oh Josh!Does this mean you haven't forgotten me?"
"Again,what do you want?"he asked,exasperated. The ice pack had fallen from his foot and it was hurting.
"Don't talk to me like that,Josh!You're so mean to me!" her voice was high pitched now,like she was about to cry.
Joshua rolled his eyes,he wasn't surprised by her quick change in moods anymore.He was used to it.
"Penelope," he said carefully,"why are you calling me? I thought we agreed that we'd never speak to each other again,so what the hell is this?"
"I only agreed so you'd disagree,Josh!I wanted you to fight for me,for us!"
"Ugh!There was no us,Penelope,don't you understand? I told you I didn't want a relationship,didn't I?But you kept smothering and bothering me until I said yes,and then you broke up with me."
"Because I love you,Joshua and you don't care!I did everything for you!"
Joshua slapped his hand on his forehead.He deeply regretted dating this girl.It was his fault,he thought,for sleeping with her knowing that she was virgin.He knew how they behaved after sex,but damn it she was so persistent.She'd practically come to his room naked that night and begged him to make love to her.What could he have done?
Afterwards, she'd followed him around like a puppy,smothering him with love until he'd agreed to date her.She was worse as a girlfriend. She called him every thirty minutes to find out where he was,who he was with,if he'd eaten,what he'd eaten.It was torture.Whenever,she couldn't reach his cell,she'd call Emiko,who'd make up some outrageous lie that'd have her running helter skelter looking for Joshua.Emiko laughed his head off during that time.The situation was funny to him,but it wasn't to Joshua.
The worst part was that he couldn't break up with her.When he'd even suggested that they take a break,she'd thrown herself at his feet,sobbing uncontrollably.People had stopped to stare at them,looking at him like he was a criminal.He'd walked away from her,unable to bear the embarrassment she was causing him.Emiko had called her nsobu. He was right.She was trouble.
"Penn,you broke up with me,remember? You!I didn't force you to."
"It was a mistake,Joshua, please! I was drunk,it was four a.m. and my friends were all telling me to do it because they knew you didn't love me!"she cried."But I know you do..deep down Joshua,you love me!"
Joshua sighed heavily."Penelope..Penn..you're a very pretty girl.You're smart,too.I'm sure you'll find someone else.Someone who can deal with your craziness,cos I swear to God I am tired of this shit.You need to focus all your obsessiveness on some other guy,a'ight?"
"No!"
"Don't call me again."
"I'll kill myself,Joshua,I swear!"
"Goodbye, Penn."
