His lips tasted like June.
They were as soft cushions,too.
She knew the feel, the taste of them well. They were imprinted in her brain. She knew how they made her mind fog whenever they touched hers. She knew how his lips parted to show the most perfect dentition when he smiled. Most of all,Millie knew how much she hated those lips at the moment.
She stood on the side walk opposite the restaurant, staring up at him on the balcony. The railings were draped with flowers and white tapestry as was the norm with La Château restaurant. He was seated at a table, staring straight ahead. His brown hair was tousled but it still managed to look perfect. He had his thumb on his chin and his elbow on the table. The black short sleeved shirt hugged his body tightly and enhanced his biceps.
Millie gulped.
Even as much as she hated him,she could not help but admire his beauty.
Suddenly he turned, and froze when he saw her.His features registered surprise and for a moment Millie forgot she hated him.How could she hate someone so handsome.
Until he smirked and the feeling vanished like smoke, into thin air.
She glared at him, which made him smile even more.
There it was again, perfect lips, perfect dentition.
Yup,she hated him.Hated every part of him.
She made her way into the restaurant. It was warm, despite the cold weather outside. The heating system must be working fine today,Millie thought. She tucked a strand of blond hair behind her ear and made her way towards the stairs.
Her path was effectively blocked by a waiter. He gazed at her dressing. Her large, tiger fur coat and large boots. He then looked behind her.Millie followed his line of sight and cringed. She had trailed in snow when she walked in.She turned to look back at him and could clearly see the disdain on his face.
"I'm sorry," she said softly."I didn't mean to-"
"But you did, mademoiselle," he interrupted rudely.Which annoyed Millie more because he had a French accent. She liked the French.
"I'll clean it up if-"
"Non.How horrendous. If you can make this much mess walking in,I doubt you'll be able clean it without making it worse or disturbing our customers." He sighed heavily and rolled his eyes.
Millie squinted at him."I am a customer too,you know. And I do not like your tone towards me.I already apologized, so step aside and let me through or I'll report you."
He looked unfazed."Go ahead. But first take off that hideous coat,it's about a hundred degrees in here, not twenty.Plus, you're repulsing the customers."He scoffed and walked away.Actually, catwalked away.
Millie stared after him openmouthed. Then blinked back in surprise when she saw him smiling affectionately at another waiter.
Gay.Of course.Millie sighed and shook her head. That explained the attitude.
She trudged up the staircase and was soon out in the open.
She spotted him before he did her.
He grinned when he saw her and leaned backwards. He raised a finger and gestured for her to come over. She glared daggers at him,and was sure her expression could tell that she was anything but pleased, but he seemed not to take a hint.
She stood opposite him,her hands still tucked in her pockets.
"Millie Pica," he said lazily."You look as pale as always."
"You bastard," she said through clenched teeth.
"Now,now,no need for compliments, love. We're here to discuss business." He leaned forward.
Millie could see his eyes clearly.Blue with a dash of silver ringing in the pupil. His thick brown eyebrows and slightly upturned pointed nose were distracting.
But she refused to look at the most distracting part of him,she would not let herself get carried away by how they would feel again if he kissed her.
That would never happen.
Never again.
"Sit," he told her.
She stared at him for a moment defiantly, then sat opposite him.
"There. That's how I like you.Quiet and obedient. This spiteful and angry personality doesn't suit you at all, dear Millie."
"Where is my father?" she said gruffly.
She was trying hard not to cry.She refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing tears in her eyes.He was right. The angry and spiteful personality wasn't her at all.She was the complete opposite.
"Your father's life is hanging by a thread. If you don't give us what we asked for, he'll be dead by nightfall."
Millie's gasped. She stared at him in shock.
How could she ever have loved this person? How could she not have seen the kind of monster he was?She had been so blinded by his looks, his words that she hadn't noticed that he was just using her.
Their love was never real.
"I hate you," she growled.
He threw his head backwards and laughed. She saw the dimple in his left chin and her stomach clenched.
"Oh come on,Millie Pica!Just a few nights ago,you were uttering words of love in my ear.I think it went like," he paused and his face took on a sad look,"I love you,Nikolai.I'll never leave you,I swear."
He was mimicking her, mocking her.She wanted to kill him.
"Now,do you have what we asked for or not?"he asked.
She paused and glared at him, hoping that he would feel the full impact of her rage. But he didn't.He stared right back at her, with his palm outstretched.
She decided to try on another technique. This wasn't really a technique. This was actually how she felt.
"Nik,please, "she began, her eyes turning watery." Please, what you're doing is insane.Think of our families.Think of what this'll do to them."
"Oh,come off it,Millie," he said in annoyed tone."Just hand me the artifact and all will be well.Your father will go back to you and none of our families have to know."
"Please,Nik,please. This belonged to my mother. It's the only thing of hers we have.I can't part with it,what will I tell my sister? What will I tell Gabe?Come on,Nik,you're not like this.You're-"
"Enough!" His fast slammed the table, startling her and people nearby. He paused for a moment sighed when he saw the racket he'd caused.
A waiter walked up to them.
"Excuse moi, monsieur. Such loud and animalistic behavior is not allowed at La Château. Kindly keep your voice down, and you," he turned to Millie.Millie noticed it was the same waiter from downstairs."Keep your emotions in check, snow girl,"he said brusquely and scoffed before walking away from them.
Millie stared after him again. Then she turned to look at Nikolai. He was staring at her,but with a different expression. It resembled the same expression he'd used whenever he told her he loved her.
The look vanished and a cold veil fell over his face again.
Millie had little hope that she could reach out to his soft side.
"Nik,our families are intertwined. Do you think they'd be happy if they found out what you're doing?"
"And how will they find out, huh? Will you tell them? You know, you're the one making this situation complex,Millie Pica.If you had given me the artifact the first time I asked for it,I wouldn't have had to take drastic measures to get it from you. So,if we really wanna point fingers,we should be pointing them at you."
"When did you become this person," she snapped."You used to be so different..kind..sweet. "
He rolled his eyes."My goodness, you're so dramatic,Millicent. That was all a farce.I'm really not that person.I only became that person so you'd trust me.And it worked..until it was time for you to give me what I really wanted and you clamed up."
Her face was streaked with tears now."You said you loved me."
"And you thought that was true?" He scoffed."Look at you,Millie, you're skinny..pale.You're not my type.It wasn't even fun trying to get you to fall for me because on top of that, you are so stubborn. Why play hard to get when there's nothing to get?"
The words struck her deeply. This was the boy who'd slept with her at night when her bed was too cold and empty.Who'd held and and sang her to sleep. The boy whom she'd shared her deepest darkest secrets with. The boy who knew everything about her.
He'd lied to her.Deceived her.And all for what?
Some million dollar artifact that her mother once owned?
She loathed him.
His lips taste like June.
That was the only good thing about him,and she'd keep that memory.
He was still looking at her, with an eyebrow cocked."Well?Where is it?"
Millie took a deep breath, then wiped her face with her hands. She was going to be brave. She had to be.It was the only way to save their families from the damage his greed would cause.
"I don't have it."
"What!"He stared at her incredulously.
"I don't have it,Nikolai," she said again.
"Who has it,then?"
"It's buried."
He glared at her."You're lying,Millie Pica, and your father will pay dearly for-"
"I'm not lying," she interrupted."The necklace is not in my possession. It's buried in...,"her voice trailed off.
"Well?Buried where?" he asked impatiently.
"Beneath the haunted house of Charles Châteaux."Hi guys! Thanks for reading my first entry of TABIMC.Hope you enjoyed it.
