"Sebastian was the most ruthless bastard we ever knew.He was the head of our gang,The Colony.All the other gangs feared us because of him.We were the top dogs, the predators,the-"
"I get it.Please get to the point," Joshua interrupted.
Terrence shook his head sadly.
"No,you don't get it,J.You probably think he's one of those thugs that thirsted for power and got it by brandishing a gun everywhere he went.No...Bash was worse.He was sick in the head.He wasn't your average power hungry thug,he had power.What he did daily was eliminate any threat that came his way.He killed his own father for standing up to him.He was a self proclaimed king and we were all in his kingdom.No one dared opposed him.His word was law.For those of us he'd hand chosen to be in his harem,we were considered lucky by others but we really weren't because we paid with blood whenever Bash felt we did something wrong.Sure we enjoyed the benefits-the money was surplus,the drinks bountiful,the girls...countless-but we also suffered for it.Our lives were dictated by him.Every breath,every move,Bash knew.We used his power to get whatever we wanted,though.Wherever we went,all we had to say was Bash and heads would bow."
"In other words,he was a bozo y'all worshipped?" Joshua asked,his expression blank.
Terrence smiled slowly.Joshua was taking the matter lightly.
"Not all of us.Cade Johnson was the exception,"Terrence answered.
"CJ?"
Terrence cocked an eyebrow. "I see you've heard of him.News travels fast."
"Yeah,sort of.Carry on," Joshua said impatiently.
"When Cade moved into the neighborhood, we thought he was just a regular guy.You know, the unsuspecting new neighbor.Bash ordered us to give him the usual scare we gave the new blood on our block.You see,what we'd do,is wait for the neighbor to move in fully and settle down. Then we'd send a message after a week or two.Usually,it's a dead bird or puppy,depending on the sex and size of the new neighbor.Anyway,we send a note alongside the corpse,warning the neighbor not to interfere in our shit and basically not call the cops if he/she sees any shady business.J,you won't believe the surprise we got when we went to Cade's house to deliver the package.The moment we scaled the fence and landed on his lawn,it was the end for us."
Joshua leaned forward. "What happened?"
"His house was wired,J.From top to bottom.The moment we landed,it was like we'd entered a war zone.We had knives and all sorts of hi-tech military devices flying at us from various angles.I gained some major injuries that night,man.We figured we accidentally tripped a wire or something so we sought to escape as quickly as possible before one of us got caught.It was too late because Cade came out a second later and saw us." Terrence shook his head."Man,it was the worst day of my life till date.He fucking threw darts at us.Poisoned darts.Each one of us that was struck went lifeless immediately.The motherfucker killed them right before my eyes.He saved me for last.I looked at him striding towards me all shirtless and still holding one last dart in his hand and I swear to God,I peed my pants.
I thought,Fo' sure this nigga's gonna kill me.But,he looked me in the eye,smiled and handed me the dart.Then he told me to leave,and inform Bash that none of us were a match for him and that we 'hoodrats' ,in quote,should never cross his path again."Terrence sighed. "When the news got out,all hell broke loose.At first,Bash was surprisingly calm.He was a strategic guy,very smart and cunning too.He was mad but was trying to figure out a way to get back at CJ big time.However, people in the hood started to mistake his calmness for weakness.The Colony was getting antsy.They wanted revenge.It became worse when we buried our homies.Soon,people began to actually think Bash had lost his power.They were starting to secretly respect CJ.You see,we found out he was an ex Navy officer.He'd served.So he was actually skilled...and learned.He had an advantage over Bash.He had real leadership potential.A few months passed after the incident,we hardly crossed paths with CJ,and on the few times we did,we avoided him.It was a new feeling for us.Normally, people cowered in or presence,but there we were,dodging a single man because he was more powerful than all of us put together. It was sort of thrilling, and some of The Colony planned on joining CJ.
Now,just when we thought Bash had completely forgotten about the matter and had stepped down a bit,indirectly ranking CJ higher than him in terms of kingship in the hood,he did something unbelievable.You see,CJ's sister came visiting.She was this brown skinned doe eyed beauty.CJ obviously adored her.Long story short,Bash raped her,cut off her tongue and dumped her in plain sight.The whole neighborhood saw her.The battle lines were drawn that day."
Joshua sighed."While your story is mildly entertaining,Terrence,I fail to see the connection to Isabella.Which is what I'm most interested in,no offence,not some gang rivalry."
Terrence licked his lips and scratched his head.
"See,I was getting to that.I just needed to lay down the foundation.Needed you to know who Sebastian was,who CJ was and how they became sworn enemies.These two hated each other,but the only thing they had in common was Bella." He smiled."Bella was their everything,J.She was their golden egg.Bash was obsessed with her.So was CJ."
Joshua leaned forward."Why?"
"For obvious reasons,first of all.She's damningly attractive.She was an asset to the gang.Secondly,she's really smart.She came to the Hood when she was eleven,and by the time she was fourteen she knew how to shoot a gun.As heartless as Bash was,Bella was his weakness.CJ too,fell in love. Bella was part of the gang,but she was never really really part of it.She was only with us because she loved Bash,but in actual fact,she was a lone ranger.We all loved her though.Everyone loved Bella."
Joshua's ears perked up."She loved Bash?"
"Yes,she did,but their love was a sick kind.They tortured each other.We all thought that they'd either get married or kill each other,for real tho'.It was really really deep, J.That's why Bella's gotta run.When he gets out,he's gonna come after her..and he's gonna kill her."
Joshua frowned."Why?If he loved her so deeply, why would he wanna end her?"
"Because Bella's the one who sent him to the pen.She's the reason he's behind bars."
