"That's one half," Minato said, looking to his son, "Now who should be the other jinchuriki?"

"Why not Rima's son?" Kushina asked, releasing the fox's claw.

As if on cue, the blue-haired jounin emerged from the treeline, katana in hand. Her eyes widened when she saw the state of her sister and her husband.

"Good lord!" she said from outside the barrier.

"Rima," Kushina said, "Where's Nikko?"

"Itachi's taking care of him and Sasuke," Rima said, slamming her fist against the barrier, "Lower the barrier, I can help you two."

"It's too late for that," Minato said, "I want to make Nikko a jinchuriki. Is that okay?"

The nine-tails growled.

"Yes," Rima said, "I'll return shortly. Just hold on. Maybe, have a bonding moment with your child while you still can."

With that, Rima went to retrieve her child. She ran faster than she ever had before. Itachi questioned her when she returned, but she ignored his questions.

Rima hesitated when she saw Nikko. She wondered if she could really do it, if she could really take a ten-month-old to the battlefield.

Gritting her teeth, Rima picked up Nikko. "Time to go become a hero, little one," she said as she carried him toward the nine-tails.

Kushina and Minato were barely clinging to life when Rima returned. The barrier had faltered and the fox was gone.

"Sorry, Rima," Minato said between breaths, "You were too slow, so I had to seal one half inside me. Of course, you can transfer tailed-beasts, right?" He coughed, blood and spittle flying from his lips as he did so. "Listen, the man behind this is Madara Uchiha."

Rima knelt down and placed Nikko on a patch of dirt untouched by the blood. "Just rest," she said, calm despite the situation. She began to draw a jutsu formula around Nikko with Minato's blood.

Minato smiled and looked to Naruto. "My son," he said, "Naruto is the other jinchuriki. Do me a favor and. . ." It was then that Minato breathed his last.

"I'm sorry," Rima said, "If only I'd been here sooner." She finished the formula and wove a series of hand signs. "Secret Sealing Art: Tailed Beast Transferral."

The Third Hokage arrived as Rima was finishing the seal. "Rima," he said, "What happened?"

"Lord Fourth split the nine-tails in two and sealed him," Rima said, "Nikko and Naruto are the new jinchuriki of the fox."

Hiruzen looked to Minato and Kushina. "I see," he said, "Well then, it's time to move to clean up. We'll mourn later."

"Minato said that the man behind this is Madara Uchiha," Rima said, "I'm going after him. Maybe I can stop this from happening at other villages."

"What about Nikko?" asked Hiruzen.

"Fugaku can take care of him," Rima said, "He is the boy's father after all."

"Very well," said Hiruzen as he picked up Naruto.

"Oh, and don't let Fugaku know that Nikko's a jinchuriki. I don't trust him enough with that knowledge."

"As you wish," Hiruzen said, "but I cannot guarantee that Danzo won't find out. You know what'll happen if he does."

"Tell Danzo if he touches my son, I'll kill him with a rusty nail," Rima said as she picked Nikko up, "I'll drop him off at Fugaku's house before I head out." She turned away from Hiruzen and walked her child toward the doomed clan.

Several years later, Itachi would kill the Uchiha, sparing only Nikko and Sasuke. He would show Nikko the day when his father and Rima broke two of the three prohibitions, leading to Nikko's birth.

He would tell Nikko and Sasuke to kill their best friend. Nikko would listen and remember.
