Naruto looked around for Nikko. Where is he? he thought. Sasuke also looked concerned. I hope nothing bad happened to him.
Sasuke broke the silence. "Naruto, do you know where Nikko is?" he asked.
"Not a clue," Naruto said, "You don't?"
"He hasn't come home since after graduation," Sasuke said.
"Where could he be?" Naruto asked.
Meanwhile, Nikko hid behind a tree in the Forest of Death. They've been chasing me for two days, he thought as he caught his breath.
"Open the gate," Kurama said, "I can save you."
Nikko shook his head. Who are these two? he thought. He used his kunai as a mirror and watched a pair of Foundation members search through the bushes for him.
They're strong, he thought, Way out of my league. What could they want? Are they after Kurama? He sighed and lowered his kunai. I think I've led them far enough.
Nikko transported himself to a marker from the night he graduated. "I'm going to be late now," he said.
"I wouldn't worry too much about that," a Foundation member said as he emerged from the forest.
"You knew?" Nikko asked.
"You can hide nothing from the Foundation," the masked man said, "Come peacefully and we won't hurt you."
"Sorry," Nikko said, "I've never heard of the Foundation, so the chances are zero that I'll go with you."
"That's unfortunate," the Foundation member said. He rushed forward and swung a kunai at Nikko.
Nikko transported himself to a different marker, an action that proved unnecessary. An ANBU Black Ops member intercepted the kunai.
"Tell Danzo that if he tries this again, he'll be branded as a rogue ninja," the ANBU said, "Those words come from Lord Third himself." He didn't sound any older than Nikko.
The Foundation member grunted and disengaged. "Very well then," he said, "but this isn't the last you'll see of the Foundation."
Nikko smiled as the Foundation man walked away. "Thank you," he said to the ANBU.
"Come," the ANBU said, "Lord Third wishes to see you."
The ANBU lead Nikko out of the forest. When the adrenaline wore off, Nikko's limbs felt like lead. He stumbled forward, but the ANBU caught him.
"Sorry," Nikko said, "I haven't slept in two days, and I've been running from those Foundation guys since Naruto and I beat up Mizuki."
"Can you walk?" the ANBU asked.
"I'll be fine," Nikko said. He made a shadow clone and used it for support. They continued toward the Hokage office.
When they entered, Nikko was surprised to see all of the jounin instructors gathered. "What's going on?" he asked.
"Nikko," Hiruzen said, "Danzo, the head of the Foundation, has found out about your secret. I don't know how he found out, but we must address your safety."
"What is the Foundation?" Nikko asked.
"They're a division of assassins under the command Danzo," Kakashi said, "and they're very good at their job."
"What would they want with-" Nikko stopped himself, "Uh, my secret." The jounin took the hint and left the room.
"Danzo's always had it out for the Uchiha," Hiruzen said, "Anyway, we've decided that the best thing for you as of now is anonymity. So, what do you say about joining the ANBU?"
Nikko raised an eyebrow. "I don't think I'll fit in very well," he said, "My skills are not on par with the ANBU."
"That's why Ukimora here will be by your side at all times," Hiruzen said, "He will also train you in whatever he sees fit."
"Very well," Nikko said.
"Good," said Hiruzen, "Tomorrow, meet Ukimora at the ANBU headquarters. He'll show you where it is. Other than that, you're free to go for today. Just. . . stay in public."
Shortly after the meeting, Naruto and Sasuke were glaring at each other. One of the graduates bumped Naruto, causing him to fall forward. They would've kissed, had Nikko not slipped his hand between them. "What in the Hell is going on here?" he asked, ignoring the pain radiating from his seal.
"Nikko," Sasuke said, "where have you been? You look awful."
"Gee, thanks," Nikko said, "I'll tell you where I was when we're away from too-keen ears."
"It's Nikko," Sakura said, "He saved Sasuke from having to kiss Naruto."
"I'm not that bad," Naruto grumbled.
Nikko chuckled and stumbled back, his exhaustion making him clumsy. "Mind if I sit?" he asked.
Sasuke slid over and let Nikko sit beside him. Sakura and Naruto filed into the bench as Iruka walked in. "Okay," Iruka said, "Quiet down. I will now announce the ninja teams."
Nikko zoned him out as he read the names of the potential genin. Instead, he focused on how he was going to protect Sasuke and Naruto from the Foundation.
Then, something occurred to him. Itachi, he thought, he was in the ANBU. Nikko looked out the window and watched the birds play.
Sasuke nudged Nikko. "Something bothering you?" he asked.
Nikko shook his head. "Nothing," he said.
When Iruka finished Naruto raised his hand. "Iruka-sensei," he said, "What about Nikko?"
"Nikko's not on here," Iruka said, "He's been assigned to something else."
Naruto looked to Nikko. "What did you get assigned to?" he asked.
"It's a secret," Nikko said, "but it's important." And it's the key to Itachi's death, he thought.
