Chapter Four

When I wake up, its pitch black, or at least I think It is. I look around, able to see everything just as clearly as if it were day. I shrug, thinking little of it. I stand and realize I no longer feel sick, but I feel different. I walk into my bathroom, and flip on the lights. I wince at their unusual brightness and the loud humming of electricity. I stair at myself in the mirror, amazed yet frightened by what I see.

My usual tan skin is know as white as the snow outside. My cropped, raven black curls are now longer and thick. My eyes have gone from a dark dull blue to an amazing cobalt blue, bright and sparkling. My pale lips are know a strawberry red. I'm confused by my sudden change in appearance and I run to my parents room. I knock on their door, and mother opens it. Her eyes widen when she sees me.

"Jade?" she whispers. I nod, just as bewildered as she is. She takes my hand and sits me on her bed, tells me to wait here, and goes to get the rest of the family. When they all come back, they stair and i start to shift uncomfortably under their gazes. Grandma mutters "vampire child" and i'm feeling scared again. I may only be nine, but everyone here knows what vampires are and what they can and will do.

I look over at my twin sister lily. She looks the same as she did before, just like me. She looks at me uncertainly, like she cant tell if i'm even her sister or not anymore. My gaze flits over to my older brother, Mathew, who is shaking his head, unable to believe whats happened to his little sister. Now i'm getting frustrated. Why cant they understand that i'm still me, I just look a little different. I'm getting a headache. There's this multitude of loud beats in the room, driving me crazy. I'm scared to think its my families heartbeats. I grab a pillow from the head of the bed and cover my ears with it, trying to muffle the sound. It didn't work very well.
