Chapter song~ Broken by seether ft. Amy lee
I freeze and I can sense Ash do the same. I wonder, the hunters wouldn't have done this and talked, so it must be some civilian who's family had been hurt or killed by a supernatural.
I've seen these kinds before, grief clouding their judgement, they go looking for a creature to blame for killing or hurting their family. Typically, if you just talk softly and calm them down, they'll break down, collapse in tears and you can just take them home, they'll think it was just a dream and wake up in the morning unharmed.
But there are the few people who actually attack and look for a fight because they think its their job to save the world after a creature killed someone they once knew, that normally never ends well....
If your destined to be a hunter, you are tracked down and taken when you reach the age of 13. They train you, and give you the mark of the hunters. you stay with them until you die, and when your taken, its sudden and they make it look like an accidental kidnapping or some sad story for the family and public.
I move my arm up to push my hair out of my face, testing to see if this person is serious or just in grief. I hear Ash suck in a breath and I feel a sharp point just between my shoulder blades. A cold, menacing voice says,
"Don't push it vampire, I will stake you without a second thought and leave your boyfriend here with the body."
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Ash tense up and I hear a low growl. The guy laughs,
"Ah, I see I hit a nerve with your girlfriend here.... Vamp your lucky I hate wolves more, so he will die first."
A hand grabs me by my hair and forces me off the ground pulling my head back. The stake is suddenly pointed directly at my heart from the front. On the wrist of my capture, naturally is the sign of a hunter. I sigh inwardly knowing this isn't going to end well.
I hiss and yank my hair out of his grasp, then back again headbutting him. I grab the stake trying to pry it out of his hand but it doesnt budge. I run out of his reach and turn to face him, but suddenly Ash is standing in front of me and I can't see the hunter, but I do hear him laugh.
"How cute, your actually trying to protect that cold blooded beast... But what can I expect from a mutt who's begging for the scraps of the world."
Ash growls again,
"First of all, you will not talk about her that way, I can and will easily kill you if you try to hurt her again.. And she is not my girlfriend."
The hunter laughs again, and I hear the click of a gun chamber snapping into place, I can smell silver in the air. Without even thinking, I dart out from behind Ash and tackle the hunter to the ground, knocking the gun from his hand but unfortunately not the stake. I try to pin his arms to the ground but he kicks me in the back of the head with a steel toed boot. I feel blood drip down my neck but I keep fighting. Somewhere behind me, Ash yells,
"Jade!"
just as I feel the tip of a stake go through my back, but it suddenly stops an inch from my heart. I freeze knowing if I move it'll only go deeper and pierce my heart, killing me in seconds. I hiss,
"What are you afraid of hunter? I'm not even trying, if your going to kill me do it already!"
I can feel the hunter breathing hard, as if trying to make a decision, not as much from the fight.
All of the sudden, the stake is ripped out and I'm thrown backwards. Ash catches me before I hit the ground and I stand ignoring the nagging pain in my head and back. I hiss in annoyance feeling my eyes flash crimson red and my fangs itch to come out. The hunter stares in slight amazment, slight horror and even a little sadness. He stares for so long I start to wonder what the hell is wrong with him. Out of nowhere, he asks,
