Ava
Winter, a time when the water froze in the air and you were forced to clean up the aftermath. The sun was breaching the horizon in a way that almost made this feel like a dream. On mornings like this, I could be sleeping enjoying the warmth that my blanket provided. How I long for it to be one of those mornings.
My alarm clock blared in my ear. The loud beeping startling awake not only me but my two cats as well. I slam my hand around the clock in a mindless attempt to turn on the infernal noise. I unwrap my blankets in order to see what I was slamming my fist at.
With the press of a button, the beeps stop and I am forced to move from my bed. I let the stuffed animal fall from my arms as I stretch out my arms. 'Hey!' A small voice calls out. I turn around and pick up the bear.
"Sorry, Bearington but I needed to stretch." I chuckle out before putting the stuffed bear on the pillows. I make my bed around him and grab a fresh pair of clothes and a towel.
When my bedroom door opens I am greeted with a slobbery kiss. "Frenchy down!" I laugh out. She bounds into my room sniffing everything before bolting back out. "Come on Berlioz, let's go take a shower." My black Persian cat bounded after me leaving her sister Maleficent, behind.
My fingers connect with the cold metal handle as I open the bathroom door. I let my clothes fall off my body and turn on the shower. The water cascading down my body. I close my eyes and lather shampoo into my hair with a sigh. I longed for this day to already be over so that I could go back to bed. "Ava! Get down here before I feed your breakfast to Frenchy!" My eyes shoot open allowing soap to get into my eyes. I cry out frantically attempting to rid my eyes of the firey feeling.
"Coming grandma!" I rush to finish, quickly washing out the shampoo and putting in conditioner. I grab a towel from under Berlioz and dry off. I comb my black hair and slip on my jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I run out of the bathroom and stumble my way down the stairs. I take a sharp left turn to the kitchen counter. I sit on a barstool and wait for my grandma to give me my plate.
"Good morning Ava," my mom kisses my head and sits down next to me a newspaper in her hand. My grandma finally spots me and gives me a plate of biscuits and gravy. I silently squeal and load it down with pepper.
"Morning mom. Thanks, grandma!" I dig into the food enjoying the meal. My phone buzzes from inside my pocket. I wipe my hands on my napkin and pull it out. I glace over it before placing it on the table, earning me a glair from my grandmother.
"Who was it?" My grandma asks from the kitchen.
"It was just Ian reminding me we have a paper due tomorrow. Can he come over after school to finish?" I look between my grandma and my mom and take another bite.
My mom opens her mouth only to be cut off, "I don't know Honey Bunny I have Bingo and your mom has work, no one will be here to make sure nothing goes down." The biscuit chunk in my mouth launches down my throat making me gasp for air. I cough and cough attempting to get it out.
"Mom!" My mom yells at her patting my back. I chug down the orange juice that was next to me finally getting down the chunk.
"Grandma! Ian is gay and has a boyfriend! Nothing is going to happen!" I wipe my eyes free from tears. My mom takes her hand off my back and sighs.
"Still? I pray for that boy every night and he still likes his boyfriend." My grandma takes my plate and scrapes the leftovers on the floor for Frenchy to eat. "I guess he can come over but he better be gone when we get back."
"Oh thank you, grandma, you're the best!" I hug her tightly before pulling out my phone and texting him back. Ian was a good friend and we had been friends since we were babies. His dad and mine were friends so by default that meant me and him had to be friends.
"Okay, Goose we gotta go. I have to go to the food bank." My mom looks down at her watch then grabs her car keys from the rack. I grab my backpack and sling it over my shoulder. I hug my grandma goodbye and pet my cats and the dog. "I got your blanket, some pain killers, your schoolwork, your solar phone charger, your hotspot, and Bearington." I slide into the car and wait for my mom to get in.
When she enters she buckles up and starts the car. "Thanks, mom." I smile at her. She smiles back and shifts the car into drive. The ride was peaceful and normal. The radio playing in the background and the slight singing of my mom.
It is only at the sound of our favorite song that I perk up. My mom and I look at each other before busting out into song.
"Why do you build me up buttercup!" My mom sings. I laugh at her antics. It was mornings like this that reminded me of when my mom and dad use jump up and dance when it came on. When Jordan would grab my hand and dance with me and Mikey would grab the cat or the dog.
I look up onto the open road that is suddenly not a road anymore. Trees were coming closer and closer. "Mom!" I scream out. She slams on the break tossing us forward. She jerks the wheel making us do a 90-degree turn fliping where the tree was on my side. The snow made us drift right into the tree crushing me in the car.
There was red everywhere and I was so tired, closing my eyes for a second wouldn't hurt, would it? I close my eyes and allow myself to fall into a deep sleep.
----------
My head felt like I had 1000 hangovers. I slowly crack open my eyes to look around. I seemed to be in a hut with a lot of animal skins. It for some reason looked familiar, too familiar. I sit up and look around for anything that was mine. I was however in a blue jacket covered in white fur. It was warm and comforting.
My mind was filled with questions none of which I could answer. I look around some other beds and some skins only to find my bag. I crawl over to it and grab it quickly and search inside. It had from what I could see everything still in it. I slip it on and stand up fully.
I walk over to the flaps that let in mass amounts of light. I crack one and peek my head out. Cold air chills my face. I look around seeing little to no one. I almost make a run for it until I see a girl dressed in a blue trench coat walking toward me. I stumble back in the hut and sit back down on the bed.
The flaps crack open and the girls head pokes in. Her brown hair put up neatly. I know I knew this from somewhere, I just can't think of where. "Oh, you're awake!" She comes over to me and takes off a glove. She puts her hand to my forehead, then withdraws it. "When we found you, you were practically dead. What happened?" I look up at her trying to remember.
"My mom and I were in a car, and we hit a tree." I put my hand to my face trying to remember anything else.
"A car?" She asks. I look at her quizzically. "I think you hit your head. Either way, I'm Katara, what's your name?"
