Ava

Aang had been playing in the snow while Katara was fully engaging in class. She had fully advanced in her water bending. She was almost a master and even I was amazed. Aang was rolling around in circles around momo who was eating snowflakes.

I had taken the time here to prefect my gliding. I was able to do twists and turns but strong wind gusts still made me waver.

Air brushed passed my face as it chilled me to the bone. I open my mouth and begin to eat the falling snow. The taste of ash suddenly fills my mouth as I begin to cough. I lose my focus and fall directly into the middle of a fight between Katara and another student.

Katara and Pakku rush over to me to see if I am fine. Pakku had grown a liking to me for an unknown reason. Although I doubt that he liked me the way he like Katara or even Sokka. They were his love's grandchildren. "Ava, what happened?" Katara helps me sit up.

I didn't answer and just looked into the sky. The once white clouds where black and the snow was the same. "We have an issue."

----------

The Cheif, Master Pakku, and Princess Yue sit in front of a large group of people. Most of them, men aside from me and Katara. "The day we have feared for so long has arrived. The Fire Nation is on our doorstep. It is with great sadness I call my family here before me, knowing well that some of these faces are about to vanish from our tribe. But they will never vanish from our hearts. Now, as we approach the battle for our existence," Cheif Arnook raises his arms pointing them to the sky. " I call upon the great spirits! Spirit of the Ocean! Spirit of the Moon! Be with us!" He lowers his arms looking out into the crowd, "I'm going to need volunteers for a dangerous mission."

Sokka stands without hesitation, "Count me in!" His eyes held only determination. Katara and Aang look at him with shock.

"Be warned. Many of you will not return. Come forward to receive my mark if you accept the task." Chief Arnook called out, many more men raising up alongside Sokka. They all form a line leading up to where Arnook was standing. He dipped three fingers in red paint and painted lines down everyone's face.

I see Yue on the verge of tears and Sokka not far behind. I put a hand on his shoulder and squeeze. His eyes meet mine quickly then they dart to the ground. I sigh and walk out of the building.

The sun is bright and warm on my cold face. I walk to the edge of the stairwell. Aang sits on some pots and I plop down. He looks at me with sadness and fear, and I, well I just smile. I would gladly die for any of my friends.

The sound of footsteps creeps in from behind us. Aang and I turn our heads to look at the offender. Chief Arnook stood behind us a stoic look on his face, "The stillness before battle is unbearable," Katara walks up on the other side of us. "Such a quiet dread."

"I wasn't there when the Fire Nation attacked my people. I'm gonna make a difference this time." Aang's voice was determined. He was not backing down this time.

----------

We all stand on the wall. Many men have faces decorated with paint and others have a bandana covering their faces. I stand glider in hand, next to Aang. A lone ship makes its way across the horizon. Then, like a firework, a red ball exploded in the sky. Everyone gasps as the red ball as it makes its way closer to the wall. It strikes the wall leaving it slightly crumbled.

Fireball after fireball strikes the city. A single ball hits the upper part of the wall causing everyone to fall out of position. I push off my coat and turn my staff into my glider taking off after Aang. I split off to the right after seeing Aang take down the first ship.
