Prologue: All Your Fears

Incubus' POV

I crept slowly closer to the dark corner of her room. The curtains were pulled back, letting the pale moonlight stream in and make her room glow.

I stood in the darkest corner of her little room. Her face lit up by the moonlight, made her look vulnerable and tiny and it made me feel a bit guilty--a bit, but not enough for me to stop myself.

I watched her eyes move rapidly underneath the thin eyelids that covered her eyes from me. I moved away from the dim corner and walked towards her sleeping form, no longer being able to hold in the painful, crushing sensation that took over me--the beast was slowly unleashing itself from my hold on it--I let it go.

I was now right beside her bed, gazing down at her tiny form nestled underneath the blankets, that she thought would save her--that even grown adults thought would save them. But of course, you couldn't hide underneath those flimsy blankets from the darkness. The darkness would find you underneath them too.

My eyes closed; I breathed in deeply, trying to will the demon back inside myself. I clenched my hands into sweaty fists as I opened my unusual eyes again. Red, that was the colour they were; the colour of the blood you saw in your nightmares, the one I purposefully gave you to please myself. I lived off of the fear and vulnerability that humans gave off when they were forcefully stuck in a horrendous, dark, twisted dream.

I opened my mouth slightly, breathed out and stretched my arm out over her sleeping body; over her brunette head. I could see and sense the happy dreams she was having; her conscience and imagination working together to weave her a paradise which would soon be pulled apart by the seams to turn into a hell.

Soon she will be tossing and turning and gasping for air that seems to disappear. She will have a pained look on her face instead of this peaceful one. She will be tormented by the horrors she hid so deeply within her mind. From spiders to loosing her only family; her father.

I could make this even better for myself and add in my own creations of darkness to envelop her. The demon was pulling at my mind; my control left me and I started the process of switching her paradise into a torment. She will remember it even in her waking life. It will haunt her throughout her days and even her nights; she will be scared to sleep.

And until that doesn't comes to an end, I'll leave her be. But I will come back immediately as her dreams wash away the horrors she was haunted by. I will come back to erase her good imagination--to replace it with my power, my shadows, my control.

She was now one of my new victims. Her dreams belonged to me.

Streets of Davis Point

It was cold out, the leaves starting to switch their usual green colour to new bright colours.

Walking in the middle of the empty road and kicking up dying leaves, was just what I needed after pushing my monster back within me before it could take too much; before it could hurt her. She was nothing to me, just another victim, but I felt for every one of my victims. I was angry at myself for taking away their lively dreams and reshaping them into ugly, grotesque ones, for them.

But no matter how much I didn't like what I was created to do, I ended up giving in to the demon, sometimes with a fight but other times, willingly.

I let my thick, ebony trench coat blow free in the brisk wind. I did get cold; I just didn't feel it. My eyes cast downwards, on the concrete road and my bright blonde hair freely whipping against the sides of my face, I walked through the silent streets. My hands were in my pockets; my equally black scarf slightly tightening around my neck from being pulled by the wind.

"Wow Incubus, you my friend, need a haircut--your hair is getting a bit long." I hear a hearty voice call out from in front of me, and I knew right away who it was. I sigh and look up at his face. He was wearing something like me, but more...ripped up.

"What the hell happened to you?" I ask him. He doesn't reply and looks over his shoulder, behind him.

"There's a car coming," he says to me and walks over to the sidewalk that was partly hidden by the great trees that grew along it.

I follow him over to it too. Mortals couldn't see us, if they did then something terrible would happen to them. I didn't know what, because I had stayed away from them as soon as I heard that from him, Starlight. We called him that because he brought on the darkness of night and also the sparkle of the stars. He of course hated it.

Once I had reached the sidewalk and started to walk along it with Starlight, the car that he had heard came whizzing by, picking up the dead leaves and making them fly in the wind all around us. This was something like the dream the man I had gone to before was having. He had been walking along a sidewalk with tall trees growing on either side of it, scattering their rusty, bronze and orange leaves all around him. I then turned it into a sidewalk that lead straight to hell--literally. With shadows and monsters lurking behind every tree, which were now dead and grey.

"So, tell me how your night went Incubus," Starlight asks me. His nickname still sounded odd on my tongue. He bought darkness to the world at nighttime, but he wasn't terrible and shadowy and evil like me. Along with the dark of night, he also bought on the light of the moon and the wonders and mystery of the stars.

He had a good side and I didn't. I was carved straight out of Hell, unlike him. I had a partner too, Succubus, but no ones know what happened to her or where she went. Our group of three night demons thought the Devil took her back--yeah right.

"Well...I claimed a new victim." I sighed out. I felt guilty of what I did and the other two demons knew it. Starlight listened to me intently and nodded every once in a while to show me that he was still listening. I told him about the dreams I altered and what I changed them into. I told him about the poor, unlucky souls that were visited by me tonight and about the ones that would be visited tomorrow night.

It had been Starlight, Luna, Succubus and I. Now it was just Starlight, Luna and me because Succubus decided to disappear. All of them were older than me. I was like their little brother, who they babied a lot, and maybe that's what got me like this, like a sad, moping, guilty sucker.

But as every day and night passed, I could feel something within myself. Something that was boiling underneath the surface if my pale skin; something that was slowly brewing over the edge and pouring itself out; something completely evil and dark. The demon within me was coming out--and not to take the dreams of poor, helpless people, but to take me away from myself.
