Chapter Twenty-Eight: Cover Up

Incubus' POV

I needed a whole lot of dreams if I ever wanted to stand up again.

Apparently, taking dreams wasn't a 'hobby' or even a curse, it was probably more of a lifestyle--a instinctive, mandatory action I needed to act upon in order to...live, or be here, on earth. Like how human need to drink water otherwise they dehydrate and start seeing things and then simply die. Well, I didn't necessarily die, because I'm a demon, but I did get really tired--and I mean tired, like 'I-can't-get-up' or 'I-can't-even-blink-because-that's-how-low-on-energy-I-am' type of tired. And that's how I felt right now--the 'I-can't-even-blink' tired.

So I lay in bed and waited for the sun to go down the western horizon and for the stars to shine and the moon (that had somehow come back a few weeks after Luna's death--I guess the Devil couldn't really disrupt the 'way of life' or mess around with the fabric of reality no matter how powerful he was) shone out into the darkness everyone hides from.

Earlier that day, I handled what I do best: stealing and fragmenting memories. So I managed to snag Anna's memory of that particular moment of her day and twist it so she forgot about the whole 'creepy Fear demon warning her of her impending doom' situation and also the part where I entered the scene. Basically, all she did that day was go to the park and sit down and then go home after staring out randomly at the dying trees. Man, I made her day seem so pathetic... well, she probably doesn't do much anyway.

The sun had fallen and the moon was half full. The stars in the sky weren't out though. Well that was because Starlight was walking next to me, down the empty road. I liked this. Starlight, me and the silent street at midnight, stealing human's dreams and haunting them in their sleep...well I did that last part anyway.

Starlight had aided me in my first two nightmare/'stealing-your-good-night-sleep' act. It was fun and funny because I accidentally had crashed into the side of a night table and managed to break the night lamp in half and woke the victim. He had screamed. Not because he thought we were outlaws trying to rob him (like every other human would first think), it was because he had clearly seen my red eyes in the half light of the moon and my ghastly fangs that had just seeped out his luscious, happy dream.

It was weird and a bit of a contradiction: a demon preying off of happy thoughts and dreams. Wow the Devil really made me seem like a pathetic loser...

"And so, she, like, looked straight at me and said, 'Babe, you can come back here any day' while pointing at her--"

"--Starlight, shut up. I don't really want to hear about your drunken endeavours." I made him stop before my ears bled. He was like a father to me!

Starlight was drunk and I seemed to be on some sort of high from the dreams I had taken. At least I wasn't talking about my run-ins with married women in the shower...

"So...what now, man?" Starlight casually and tipsily asked me.

I looked at him looking at me with drunken amusement and clumsy satisfaction from the memory he was clearly replaying, and pointed at a distant, but lit up, building not too far from where we walked.

The only place in town that was actually awake all day and night. The bar.

There was a curvy, saucy bartender who was sitting in my lap, whispering things in my ear that I wasn't any paying attention to. Though the guys at the other end of the bar really seemed like they would want to know.

I was staring off at two men who were sitting at a table in a corner, facing one another. They seemed frustrated with each other but didn't say or even illustrate the fact that they openly wanted to rip one another's throats apart. They simply sat there, staring at each other like two little boys put out on a time-out who were blaming each other for getting caught. It was amusing.

I was still struck with that 'high' that came with every dream I took. Now, plus the heavy drinking, I was basically 'off of my rocker'.

I could tell there was a clumsy, stupid and amused smile plastered on my face. My eyes were probably still red (but no one seemed to care because they were all way too drunk) and I could feel a trickle of sweat rolling down my neck, along the length of my spine, down to the waistband of my dark jeans. The heat in here was unexplainable. Maybe it came from all the bodies pressed together in this place.

Starlight had disappeared but I soon found him hunched over the bar, talking drunkly to a blonde woman who seemed a little older than him. And divorced...or maybe she was a mistress?

Then, around 2 in the morning, waking me up from my fleeting thoughts, the door to the busy, smoke filled, human packed, flew open and a giant guy came in.

And that's when all the shit went down.
