" I'll give you the money Black just leave" I heard mama say as she came in from work. Jalani, Michael, and I were doing our homework. Black was mama's boss, I never knew what she did for him but he always came here demanding money every Monday. It never failed.
I was told to mind my business and never ask questions dealing with what mama did. So I never mentioned it I thought maybe she was just embarrassed by her job. "Now Janet I playing no games with you!" Black yelled causing us to jump and turn our heads in his direction.
He glared over at us through his dark shades. Mama reached into the cabinet and pulled out a pill bottle before handing it to him. He opened it and dumped a wad of cash out before counting it. He looked up at mama and I saw fear in her eyes. Black grabbed her by her arm aggressively making me jump up from my seat at the table.
Mama shrieked in pain as he yanked her to the wall. My blood was boiling as my jaw clinched. I felt a small hand grab mine and met the honey brown eyes of my little sister. Pleading for me to sit down. I should have took her warning but I couldn't ignore my mama needing help.
I was tired of Black coming here taking mama's hard earn money and for what? I didn't care to know why all I know was since she started working for him, she hadn't been herself. She was more tired and gloomy but she had been working for him. We had more money to pay for things as far as needs and wants.
But if mama had to be like this all that didn't matter. I rather for us to be back broke than her miserable. I moved Jalani hand and slowly moved over to the cabinet. I reached for the box at the corner and pulled out the pistol mama bought for protection. Black towered over mama yelling at her and spitting in her face.
Tears rolled down her eyes and that was it. I rose the gun behind Blacks head and I saw mama's eyes widen as she shook her head. "Junior don't!" mama yelled causing Black to turn around and flip the gun so it was now in his and aiming at me. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead as i held my hands up in surrender.
I could see Jalani standing alone in the dining room froze. Wait where was Mikey??? Then i heard a loud thud and Black was holding his head. Mikey had hit him over the head with one of Jalani's hard ass toys. I took this as a chance to grab mama by the hand and run. She swooped up Jalani as we ran out the side door in the kitchen. My heart was pounding so hard i swear it would burst.
I looked and noticed that Michael wasn't outside with us. I noticed that some neighbors had came outside after hearing the rocus i guess. "Michael!" was the last thing I heard before gunshots echoed down the street. I heard mama scream before the clicking of her heels hitting the asphalt. I stood frozen as I took in the events that just took place. I was zoned out as everyone ran around in panic. I snapped out of my trance when flashing lights pulled up to the scene. There she was on the ground holding his lifeless body in the street. My face appeared calm and expressionless but my mind was racing with thoughts. That bullet should've been in me... it was meant for me...
