Chapter 5- Quiet is never good

When I decided to check id Dad was in his study, he came through the sliding glass door, covered with blood, panicked.

He asked me if anyone had come in here and if I was OK.

" No," I answered. " Who would come in here?"

" Don't go near the door." He said, as he cocked his pistol and glanced at the closed sliding glass door.

Right as he backed up to guard me, Mr. Cooper crashed through the glass door and bolted for us.

Dad shot him twice, and he fell backward, dead.

" You shot him," I said in a scared and sad tone.

" Sara," Dad said, trying to calm me down. " Listen to me. There is somethin' bad going on. We have to get out of here. Do you understand? "

Both of his hands had a firm grip on both of my shoulders.

Headlights gleamed through the living room window.

" Tommy, thank god."  Dad moved one of his hands back to his side and used the other one to grip my right arm and practically dragged me out of the front door.

"Where the hell have you been?" Uncle Tommy asked Dad as we exited the house. " You have any idea what's goin' on out there?"

( He was rounding the front of the car.)

" I have some notion," Dad said, as he opened the passenger back-seat door to find Quilla, tears running down her face, sitting in the middle.

" Holly shit," Uncle Tommy cursed, as Dad shut the door. " You got blood on you."

" It ain't mine," Dad said, as he opened his door and got in. " Let's get out of here."

" They're saying that half of the people in the city have lost their minds." Uncle Tommy rambled as he got into the driver's seat and shot the already open car door.

" Can we just go?" Dad asked.

" It's some sort of parasite or somethin'."

" Hey, Sara." Uncle Tommy said, trying to change the subject. " How are you holdin' up sweaty?"

" I'm OK," I say, lying a little. " But I'm worried about Quilla.  She's just sitting their, looking straight ahead, not even blinking."

" Wrap your arms around her and hold her," Uncle Tommy said. " She's frozen in fear."

I followed what Uncle Tommy said to do, and Quilla started acting normal again.
