Chapter 9- Payback's gonna be a bitch
" Seems like more and more people are sneaking out and gettin' infected." Uncle Joel said in a low tone.
" Here's my papers." I said as I gave them to her.
" Thank you," Tess said as she crossed the street.
" Papers." The guard said as we walked up to him.
" Here you go, officer," Tess said as she handed our papers -Uncle Joel, Tess, and mine- over to the guard.
" What's your business here?"
" Got the day off, we were just gonna visit a friend." Uncle Joel said.
" Alright," the guard said, as he gave Uncle Joel back are papers. " Move on threw."
Right when Uncle Joel took a step, the tank that was in front of us exploded.
We only had seconds to react.
That explosion triggered somethin', I had no idea what either, but I was stuck.
Tess practically dragged me away, and into the main entrance of a near apartment building.
" Fuck," Tess exhaled, as Uncle Joel shut the door behind us. " So much for the easy route."
I was breathing WAY out of sink.
My eyes were wide, and tears began to fall.
Silence filled the air.
The only noise was Uncle Joel cleaning up a deep cut with some bandages and duck tape.
They knew I was having one of my moments, so they kept quiet long enough for it to pass.
" Their gonna close the checkpoints," Tess started as she started walking again. " We're gonna have to go around, to the outside."
" Finally." I thought as we start to walk.
" We're going around the wall?" Uncle Joel asked.
He was going to say something else, but Tess beat him to it.
" Or, we could just let Robert go."
" Cute." Joel said.
" Hey...Tess." Gabe said as he came out of know-where said. " You see that shit?"
" Yeah, I was there." "Hey, how's the east tunnel looking?"
" It's clear," Gabe answered, as he walked side to side with Tess. " Just used it, no patrols. Where you off to?'
" Gonna pay Robert a visit."
" You too?"
" Who else is looking for him?"
" Uh, Marlene. She's been asking around, trying to find him."
I take the bottle of alcohol out of my back pocket and take a giant swig.
" He gonna be no brain Robert when I get done with him." I said.
" Well, you three better find him fast, because if what I heard is true, he'll probably be dead before you even get to the wharf."
" Stay out of trouble, alright," Tess said as the Gabe slowed down. " Military's gonna be out in force soon."
" Yeah-see yeah around."
