" Uncle Tommy, can you turn on the radio?" I asked.

" Sure thing." Uncle Tommy said as he turned right.

Silence

" No cell phone.  No radio. Yeah, were doin' great." Dad said.

Then, Quilla started balling again.

" It's OK, Quill, it's OK," I said, as I held her in my arms, patting her middle back.

" Did something happen?"  Dad whispered. " She's a mess."

Uncle Tommy didn't see anything.

" Tommy," Dad said, in a demanding tone. " What did she see?!"

" A dead body," Uncle Tommy admitted. " Jason Black."

I squeezed her a little more.

" Tommy..." Dad started.

" I know Joel." Uncle Tommy finished.

Silence...

" A minute ago, the newsman wouldn't shut up." Uncle Tommy said, breaking the silence he had created.

" He says where to go?" Dad asked.

" He said that the Army's puttin' up roadblocks on the highway," Uncle Tommy said as the jeep came to a stop. " No getting' into Travis County."

" That means we need to get the hell out," Dad said. " Take-"

" 71, that's where I'm headed." Uncle Tommy said, then turned.

We passed a couple and their kid on the road, and Uncle Tommy wanted to stop, but Dad talked him out of it, and we kept driving.

We came to a stop because of really bad traffic a few yards away from the couple and the kid.

A man asked what was going on, and soon after, he started getting mauled by a guy in a hospital gown.

Uncle Tommy started freaking out, and finally, Dad got him to snap out of it, turned around, and nearly ran into a crowd of people running away.

It cleared in a few seconds, and as soon as we started to try to pick up speed, a car hit us.
