The Last Picture Show// part 2

--
"Nice to see you finally home," A voice startles Hayley as soon as she walks into her house.

Hayley closes her eyes as she recognizes the voice as her fathers. She was not in the mood for this.

"You know," her mother starts, "With the amount of time you spend outside the house, you'd think that you were restricted from coming in, not going out."

Hayley opens her eyes and grits her teeth, turning to come face to face with her parents, "I could say the same about you."

"This is not about us," her mom snaps, walking closer, "You were- are, grounded. It would be appreciated if you acted like so."

"And you are parents. It would appreciated if you acted like so."

"What has gotten into you?" Her dad says, trying to keep his anger at bay, "Why are you acting like this?"

"Why-" Hayley yell, but then drops her voice level back to normal, "Why am I acting like this? Maybe because you're never here! I know that she's gone. I get it. But you've still got me. Therefore, you still have a responsibility. A duty. To be there for me. Yes, I was friends with Jason. He talked to me for 15 minutes after he left the boat, and he told me that he would be back. After knowing that Jason and I were friends, you left me to deal with his death all alone,"

Her voice cracks.

"Who does that?"

Her mom chokes back a sob and lurches forward to grab her daughter in a hug, "You're right. We're so sorry. We just got too caught up in our grief that the only outlet was work. Every time we look at you, we see her, but you're not her. You're not Ashley Cohen. You're Hayley Andrea Cohen, our beautiful, strong, independent daughter. Someone who we've been neglecting for long enough."

Her dad stands up from the chair he was sitting in as well, "I'm sorry kiddo. We're sorry. We'll do better."

The two parents pull their crying daughter into a hug. Hayley laughs, a real laugh.

They pull back and her dad smiles, "Well, while we are being serious. It's time to let you know."

"Let me know what?" Hayley's voice is still slightly stuffy from crying.

"We're trying to get out of business with the Blossoms," her mom admits.

"Why?" Hayley questions, confused. The Blossoms payed really well.

"Well," her dad answers, "There are discrepancies in their... well, everything. We're not going to bore you with the  legal details, but I think I know why that kid Jason tried to run away. His family is full of maniacs."

Hayley sniffles, "I know. They're all insane."

Her dad smiles, "Exactly sweetheart. Now why don't you go on up to bed. We're going to stay behind a bit."
