Melinda's POV
The police car flew down the back road as we were on call for back up. The sirens making loud obnoxious noises as the red and blue lights flashed.
"You stay in the car when we get there. Do you hear me, Greene?" Mike said with a stern voice. Mike has been my partner for years, ever sense I began working for the police agency. He's always telling me to stay in the car or at the station when we have a call. I don't think he understands the meaning of 'partner'. but to save time and an argument, I agreed with him.
"Alright, Young." I sighed. He looked over at me for a second, but then set his sights on the road again. The look he gave me was almost like he didn't believe a word I was saying. Well he shouldn't, he knows that I don't listen.
"I'm serious, it's dangerous out there." he warned. I looked over at him, amazed that he had just said that.
"Mike, it's our job! It's dangerous shit! That's why it's my job!" I snapped at him. He took in a deep breath and let it out. Almost like he was trying to control his anger.
"That doesn't mean that you can just jump in the middle of it." he said in a low voice. I shook my head. I was about to reply with a snide comment when the radio stopped me.
"Officer down! I repeat; officer down! Need back up! Now!" The voice was fast and rugged. I picked up the speaker and pushed the button down as I spoke.
"This is Greene! We're on our way!"
Mike gave me a look that said 'we will finish this conversation later' but I paid no mind. I was worried about the officer. They didn't say a name, and it frightened me. What if it was one of my friends? Were they okay? Have they already died? I was so deep in my thoughts I hadn't noticed that I already had my gun out and loaded. I was biting my lip with my knee bobbing up and down at a fast pace.
"Greene?" Mike tried to get my attention. I didn't reply, I just looked down at my gun in my lap.
"Greene." he said a little more harsh, no longer a question. I looked up at him, to find he was already looking at me.
"We're here, you stay in the car." I hadn't realized that the car was stopped. I looked out the window and noticed all of the other cars piled up waiting and looking at another car toppled over in the field.
I got out the car, not listening to the orders my partner gave to me, and walked behind the nearest car with my pistol raised. I looked at the men who were at the scene, I knew a few of them. They were good men. But one of the men caught my eye. He was standing out in the open, hunched over something. I knew who the man was, his name was Shane Walsh. He had this obsession over me, always asking for my number or if I wanted to go and get coffee, but I always declined.
I lowered my gun the slightest bit and jogged over to him, not seeing any threats, yet. When I made it over, what I saw made me want to scream. The officer that went down. He had a life, he had a wife, a lovely kid. His whole life was in order, and now there was a bullet hole just below his chest.
"Grimes?" I choked out a little above a whisper. He opened his eyes for a split second and snapped them closed again. He rolled his head to the side and opened them again. This time seeing who was speaking to him.
"Hey Greene." he breathed, and then a coughing fit came through and he groaned in pain.
"Greene!" I heard Mike yell. I didn't look up or even say anything as I stare at Rick. He looked like he was in so much pain.
