John's P.O.V
After introducing Alex to some other family members, we have the annual Laurens Annual Usually Really Epic No Sweat Christmas Eve Dinner Extravaganza, and yes, we expect some people to memorize that and yes the first part is an acrostic of our name, leave us alone.
I sit next to Alexander at the dinner table, holding his hand underneath the table, calming some of the nerves he still may have.
"Your family is literally some of the nicest people I've ever met." He whispers to me.
"I know. Why do you think I turned out like this?" He smiles, tightening his grip on my hand.
Some of my family members help my mother bring out dishes and dishes of food. When they're all down, my father stands up and claps his hand, getting everyone's attention.
"My family, I'm glad that this day is one of the few days we get to spend with each other because I sincerely hate you all." Some people laugh and other people clap their hands. "But in all seriousness, it's hard for all of us to get together, but when we do, it makes me extremely happy. Cheers!" Some people say cheers and others clap again. We start to dine, Alex layering a lot of things on his plate.
"A penny for everyone's thoughts?" I say. Some people groan and I just smile. I've been saying this for 5 years, they should have gotten used to it and expect it.
"I'll start." My father says. "Work is going fine. I would say some of my children's accomplishments, but that is stealing their spotlight. The best thing to happen to me recently was buying a razor I had a coupon for." Everyone laughs at him and the next person, which is one my aunts, shares her thoughts.
"Trying to finish some online classes, but it's hard doing that and managing a job, but it's working."
We just keep going down the table.
"My girlfriend I hit 6 months and I couldn't be happier."
"I got an A on my math test."
"I was invited to a prestige work event that literally no one gets invited to."
"I won first place in the spelling bee!0
Mary says.
"Finish college in a few more months, thank goodness." Martha says.
"We joined the wrestling team." The twins say. It gets to Alex and he takes a time before responding.
"I was taken in by some of the nicest people in this world." Some people aww and I smile. I realize it's my turn and I think before I answer.
"I'm just glad that everyone I love is here." Everyone claps and they go back to eating. I look back to Alexander who goes back to eating as well.
This day is perfect.
