Sam was getting better. He was almost half better than he was six months ago.
And he knew which person the credit went to.
The person who made sure he was okay from 6 in the morning to 1 at night. The person who would call her 10 times straight when he was angry and wouldn't want to talk to anyone.
Who stayed up late nights just to make sure he was okay.So he didn't forget to thank her. Just saying thank you wouldn't be enough. So, He took her for coffee on a weekend.
She was pretty surprised when he called her and asked to go for a coffee. He called and he was like," Umm hey ! Wanna grab some coffee tomorrow morning ?"
She couldn't find a reason to say no. She would grab any chance to be with him. Specially if they were alone. She would take the chance like a kid snatches the last chocolate. She felt another level of happiness when they were together.
So did he. He subconsciously realised that Haley made the world a better place for him. The whole squad was always there for him. But with Haley, it was different. It felt as if he found a missing puzzle piece when he found Haley.
For some reason, she made him feel complete.
They met at Starbucks. He was waiting for her. Black Sweatpants and a blue t-shirt. Hair was the same as always. Just a little ruffled on top.
As she walked by the door, he waved at her . Just to make sure she notices.
"Damn she looks good", sam thought to himself.
She did look good. All natural. Just a little nude lipstick. A skirt and a top. Her hair was open. It was like a wave of silk.
She walked up to him. He stood up and pulled the chair.
Haley couldn't help but laugh. "You don't have to be formal. It's just coffee. Not a date night", Haley smirked.
"Oh uhmm.. yeah sorry !" Sam said in a confusing manner and laughed.
"Its okay. It's even cute ", she gave a half smile looking at her.
Then they ordered coffee. As the order arrived they started talking.
Sam: You look really nice.
Haley: What ? I look like a mess. I woke up and somehow just walked here.
Sam: Well then, you look like a beautiful mess.Haley took a sip of her coffee.
Haley: Damn! I love this coffee so much! Makes my day better in a sip.
Haley's face beamed with and she got excited like a child. Sam smiled seeing her acting like a kid. Then he took his Camera out and pointed at her.
He took two shots of her. One, with her face covered by her hands because she was reluctant to take a photo. Second, with her having a sip of her coffee with a big grin and dimples on her cheek.
"You brought your camera even here ?" Haley asked.
"I take it everywhere. There is something special about everyone and every place. Why risk missing it ?, Sam replied.
Then he stared at her for a minute.
Haley: Sam ? Why are you staring at me like that ?
Sam: You know why I called you here ?
Haley : Not really.
Sam : To say thank you.Haley went quiet. She couldn't guess where he was going with this conversation.
Sam: Thank you for everything, Haley. I can't even think what would happen if you weren't here for me. Everything you did, I can't find a way to thank you enough. And I swear, I didn't ever think that I could be normal again. I thought I lost the old me. But you brought me back.Thank you.
Haley was so happy on the inside. She knew that Sam was better. And nothing could make her happier.
Haley : It's the least I could do Sam. I am glad I was there for you. You needed someone beside you. And I can't believe I didn't know that before. But I'm still happy that I was not too late.
Sam : Hales, you never told me how you went through it. Like, how did you know it was OCD? How did you convince yourself that you needed help? How did you say it to everyone?
Haley let out a deep breath.Haley : I didn't accept it. I couldn't believe it could actually happen to me. I thought I was always normal and mentally strong and such stuff could never get to me. I tried to stop it but it seemed like I couldn't. And at one point, I realised that it wasn't normal. And I needed help. There came a moment when I realised that I would never be able to actually heal, if I didn't get brutally honest with myself. And with the people I loved.
Sam : That's really brave. You're really brave.
Haley : Well, not really. I still jump 100 ft when I see a cockroach on the floor. Ughhhhh...She made a weird face. Sam burst out laughing.
Before Haley knew it, sam put his hands on hers.
Sam: Thank you for being there for me. For being patient with me.
Haley: Always. He had more to say. He had the words in his head. He knew that what he felt for her was way beyond gratefulness. He felt the way he never did about any other girl before. But he was not ready to get those words out. He didn't know how to do it. So he stopped talking.
They finished their coffee. He walked her home.
Honestly, he just wanted to be with her all day, every day. But he knew that wasn't possible. Not if he didn't tell her how he felt.
Or if she didn't tell him how she felt.
If she wanted, she could say it all in one breath. But she was not sure if he felt the same way.
She was all about taking chances. If it wad any other guy, she would have said it long ago. But with Sam, she couldn't take the risk. She was scared. What if it broke their friendship. What if it made things complicated ?
She couldn't afford to take the risk.
