I opened my eyes slightly, the cold air stinging my hot skin. My whole body hurt. I was certain several bones were broken and my skin was burning as blood poured from my wounds. But my physical pain wasn't what i was worried about at that particular moment."Melody?" i shouted, my voice raspy as i winced from the pain that sprouted through my lungs, "Melody!" i yelled again. No response.
I dragged myself up from my place on the ground and began searching for her. Through the rubble and the pain, i desperately called her name over and over again, hoping, at some point, she would call mine back, letting me know she was still alive.
But she didn't. After what felt like hours searching but was only a few minutes, i pulled my phone from my pocket, which had now been smashed immensely from the impact of when i hit the ground, and phoned for help.
"Tom. I need you here now, bring all the people you can recruit, except Ian and Harriet as they're with Andrew," i breathed, my voice cracking with each word
"Okay Boss, on my way."
Hanging up, i continued my search for Melody. Lifting broken glass and heaving lumps of the warehouse out of the way, I shouted her name with all of my strength. The ambulance was here now, as well as a bomb disposing team and half-a-dozen police cars. Tom had also arrived, with the rest of the team, who helped me lift the rubble. Bodies were everywhere, people who had been there for me for years were scattered along the premises, crushed underneath the stones. I couldn't believe the amount of lives that had been lost tonight, my heart hurt as i recognized every face i'd come across while looking for her. But she was still nowhere to be found.
Moving to the inside, i limped my way around the broken walls, stopping every now and then to balance myself and to catch my breath.
"Sir, please come here we need to treat your wounds immediately to prevent any infections," somebody called out to me
"No. I need to find her." i demanded, continuing further into the house, rustling through the debris in an attempt to hear her calling for help
"Sir, we really think-"
"I don't fucking care what you think! Once i find her you can do whatever the hell you want, just help me!" i shouted in anger, wiping sweat from my forehead
Maneuvering into the back of the warehouse, i caught a glimpse of her brunette hair sprawled out onto the floor. "Here!" i shouted, running over to her, "She's here! Somebody please, help me!"
Her face was scratched several times from the blast, every part of her body seeping with blood. Her lower half was caught under a pillar that had fallen down, trapping her underneath. "Shit." i cursed, using all the strength i had left to lift it off of her. Heaving it to the side, i placed my two fingers on the side of her neck and stayed still to check for a pulse. Once i felt the thumping vibrate through my fingers, i felt a huge wave of relief wash over me.
She was alive. She was here. She was alive.
"Melody, hunny, can you hear me?" i asked, my hand under her head as i gently lifted it towards me. I stroked the stay hairs away from her face as my heartbeat quickened when she didn't reply. "Melody?" i whispered into her ear
"Please step away from her while we lift her onto the stretcher sir," the medical assistant stated as he stood at her feet. Only now had i noticed that both her legs were abnormally fixated due to being trapped underneath the pillar. Both her legs were broken.
"Holy shit. No. No no no." i shook my head repetitively, refusing to believe the love of my life was unable to walk any longer
"Please sir, step away," he instructed
Moving away, he told me to return to the ambulance so they could check my wounds but i blatantly refused, determined to stay by her side no matter what. After she'd been placed onto the stretcher, we were both taken into the ambulance and driven to the hospital.
"She's finding it hard to breathe, we need oxygen." A medical attendant stated, grabbing the mask from her coworker and placing it on Melody's bruised face. She still looked as beautiful as always, despite the black and purple marks plastered across her skin.
"Will she make it?" i asked, dreading the answer as much as i needed to hear it
"It's hard to determine that right at this moment," she stated, attending to Melody's wounds
"You're bound to have an estimate, aren't you? is she going to be okay?" i pressed, refusing to accept no as an answer
"We aren't sure. Once we get her to the hospital, we'll be able to-"
"I don't fucking care about if you're able to determine that or not! Just give me something!" i shouted, all eyes on me as my blood boiled with frustration and hurt. I needed her to be okay, "Give me a fucking answer dammit!"
"Please, calm down." the man attending my wounds warned as i moved from his grasp
"Don't you dare tell me to calm down! My girlfriend could be dying and all you're telling me is that you can't fucking determine it!" i spat, running my hands through my dirty hair, brushing the curls back as i tugged on them, "Please just tell me something, anything." i whispered
"We don't think she'll make it. But we're not entirely sure yet, so don't take our word for it." She sighed, "Both her legs are broken, but her spine was also severely injured and the impact has caused her blood to clot around the damaged area, disturbing the nerve system." she explained, each word ripping my heart piece by piece
"So what does that mean?" i asked, dreading the answer that lay ahead
"She's paralyzed from the waist down."
