Running had never been Ruby's strong suit. She didn't necessarily have much stamina and it wasn't every night she found herself sprinting down the college campus.

She felt so out of breath but she kept pushing herself. She couldn't afford to waste another second. It was that time of night where everyone except the insomniacs should be awake. The streets were dark and hardly even lit by the weak light fixtures above the pavement.

Ruby was close to her destination. The Crystal Gem sorority house. It was only a few more blocks-

Ruby slammed into someone and fell to the ground, the wind completely knocked out of her.

"What the hell?!" An angry voice boomed above her, "Watch where you're going!"

Ruby didn't have time for this. She got up and tried to run away but someone grabbed the back of her shirt and pulled her back.

"I'm talking to you," The figure came into the light and Ruby immediately recognized them.

Ruby sighed. Whatever Jasper wanted it better be quick.

"I know you, don't I?" Jasper grinned. She stood directly in front of Ruby, blocking her path. "You're that drop-out wannabe that's always brooding around the west wing."

Ruby didn't respond. She had other things on her mind. Surely Jasper would just leave her alone.

"I mean, do you even go to this school?" Jasper laughed, "I thought they only let in people who could actually think a coherent thought. Do you even talk?"

This caught Ruby's attention. Was she done yet?

Jasper laughed, "You're just an idiot, aren't you? A rich idiot if you got into this school."

Ruby began to walk away. It's not like she hadn't heard any of this before.

"Oh but that's right, your little girlfriend is helping you get by."

Ruby froze. Why the hell was she talking about Sapphire?

"You know she's only keeping you around for the extra credit tutoring," Jasper grinned as she saw she had gotten to the smaller girl, "You're the only one dumb enough for her to keep teaching year round. And you're the only one dumb enough to fall for...whatever you think you have with her. I mean," Jasper was laughing now, "Do you honestly think someone like that could like someone like you?"

Ruby had had enough. She clenched her hand into a fist and punched Jasper square in the jaw. Jasper didn't even stumble. Instead she turned a dangerous glare on Ruby. "Now why'd you have to do that?"

Jasper swung her fist at Ruby's head, knocking her to the ground. Jasper grabbed her by the shirt and blow after blow landed on Ruby's face. Blood painted her face and she began to loose consciousness as Jasper gave up on punching and went straight into kicking and stomping. The entire time not a sound came from Ruby.

Just as Ruby felt she would black out, Jasper hoisted her to her feet.

"See," Jasper mocked, "If you had a brain maybe you would've known not to mess with me." Jasper shoved her back on the ground and walked away.
