Alyssa's P.O.V.

"Arghh! Why won't this goddamn locker open?" I yelled pounding on the metal. I finally got to school in what I must say was my best lifetime record of getting to school. 9 minutes, 27 seconds.

So I might not have had the cleanest shower, or brushed up to down and I probably look like a hobo in my joggers and T-shirt and my messy-all-over-the-place ponytail, but I made it, and that's what's important.

Win-win right?

Right.

Presently, I've been trying to open my freaking locker but it's jammed shut and my patience is running thin.

"Do you need some help with that?" a deep baritone voice asked. I stopped my pounding to find a guy standing next to me with an amused grin on his face. He had this perfect messy brown hair, even browner eyes and I had a feeling if he smiled I would have been blinded.

No joke.

I gave him a tight lipped smile. "Thanks, but I think I can handle my own locker."

I knew his type. Handsome, killer smile, smooth words, heartbreaker...basically a no-no for me. And besides, why would anyone come near me right now? Even I know I look awful. Heck, I feel awful.

"You sure about that? 'Cos it sure doesn't seem like it."

"I'm completely sure, thanks again." I said, hoping he'd take the hint and leave. He didn't.

"Okay, I'll just wait here and watch you struggle until you practically beg me to help you." he grinned and rested his back against the lockers.

I rolled my eyes. Dude's got some nerve all right. After another minute if locker pounding, he was still right there.

"Don't you have someplace to be?" I asked, mildly irritated. He just stood there with that same stupid grin plastered on his face.

"Nope. Today's the first day of school, no classes. I'll stay here all day long if I have to."

You know I should probably be happy that a guy this hot is willing to talk to me in the kind of state I'm in, but my thinning patience and my mild irritation coupled with my lack of enthusiasm for school is ruining all forms of reasoning in me. I am this close to snapping.

"Fine. Just get it over with, locker boy." I huffed impatiently. His grin widened as he took my place in front of my locker. Come to think of it, I wonder why he was so intent on opening the locker? Maybe he's got a locker fetish.

"And voila!" he posed like a magician displaying a trick with his hands outstretched at my now open locker.

I just started at him with a blank expression on my face. What a weirdo.

"Yeah..." I trailed putting a book from my locker into my bag pack and closing it before facing him. "Bye."

In a flash, I was gone before he could say another word. I was in such a hurry to get the hell away from that dude, I almost bumped in someone.

"Woah, what's the rush raging bull?"

"Rowan!" I squealed and pulled her into a python hug. Standing before me was one of my best friends Rowan Denner.

"You know for someone who's missed me so much you sure don't show it much." she commented after I had released her. I knew exactly what she was going at.

My post-Damon period.

It's been close to a year since it happened and my heart is still reeling from the effect of getting it broken and shattered.

Ten freaking months. I spent seven of those months locked away from the world and the remaining three changing my perspective about people and life in general. It helped really, because without that, I wouldn't have discovered it.

My inner me. And let me tell you, she's a real cynical bitch, no lie.

"Where's Shannon?" I asked in a bid to distract her.

"See if you'd kept in touch, you'd have known she went on a vacation to San Francisco and is coming back tomorrow."

I let out a deep sigh. "I know. I guess I wasn't ready to face the world yet." Rowan shook her head and put her hands on my shoulder.

"Alyssa, you told us you were fine and not to bother, then you just vanished and refused to see anyone. That is not okay."

"I tell myself that everyday. I'm sorry."

She sighed. "If we weren't such great friends, we'd have your hide right now."

Smiling, I pulled her into another hug and whispered, "I'm glad you both are. And who still says hide?"

"Don't push your luck, Alyssa." she warned and we laughed.
