There's and awkward silence and intense stare between us.
-"It's what you wrote me for..."
-"I know!" She interrupts me and it stings. Not the words, but the aggressive way she said them, and she seemed to notice. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound so harsh."
-"It's fine. I wasn't really expecting a warm welcoming." I give her a brief and tremulous smile. "The necklace reminded me of those words and they brought me here."
She sighs and looks down at her feet.
I was hoping she would ask how did these words brought me here, but she doesn't seem to want to know.
-"You're what I'm looking for, and I won't let time and distance stop me." I answer the question she didn't ask me. "Sorry, I didn't mean for it to sound like you don't have a choice, because you do, obviously, but...."
-"Emma..." She says almost whispering and it sounds like she's begging me to stop talking and to leave her alone.
-"I'm sorry, Avery." Now, I'm definitely begging.
-"I've heard." Ouch. "I told you, I'm sorry too."
She speaks in a low voice. She's not even yelling at me, she's not upset. She's hurt and tired, and that's killing me.
Say something, Ave. I need to know that you still care...that you have some energy left to make an effort...energy to forgive me...
I release a sight, but I try not to look defeated.
-"Are you busy now?" I start speaking faster than normal, almost rambling. "Can't we talk? Or I'll talk, and you'll listen. Or you'll talk and I'll listen. Whatev..."
-"She is busy." Someone screams from inside the apartment.
I'm able to muster a shattered 'oh' and I'm not sure for how long I'll hold the tears that threat falling right now.
-"Sorry for that." She says, finally looking at me.
-"I should go." I take a step back and turn to leave.
My legs don't seem to want to go, but my heart is begging me to run away from there as fast as I can because there's only so much pain it can take.
I don't hear the door closing and the hopeless romantic I didn't know I had in me, waits outside her building for her to come running and hold my unsteady body.
But she doesn't.
So, I call a taxi and go home, crying all the way there. The taxi driver doesn't know what to do so he just gives me some paper tissues and turns the volume of the radio up.
I immediately get a call from Sarah, since I got them worried with a text saying "I'm an idiot. I fucked it all up."
After speaking to her, and finally reaching home I rush to my bed.
I lay there, in the same position, looking at the ceiling, for 45 minutes.
When I finally stop crying, I plug my earphones and start listening to music. Some songs make me want to start crying again, but I'm out of tears by now. Now, my eyes just hurt really bad, just like my whole body.
I'm choosing the next song when I get a text from Avery.
I barely react to it, except that my left eyebrow dropped and my right one lifted in doubt of what my eyes are seeing.
What?!...
Not real...
Just open it to see if it's real or not...
