My cellphone buzzes with Avery's name popping up on the screen.

-"Do you have it?" I immediately ask as soon as I answer the call.

-"I do, Ems. You sound too excited." She chuckles.

-"One can never be too excited when it comes to Christmas presents." I say with a mocking tone.

-"Can I open it?"

-"I thought you were doing it already..." I sigh and groan.

-"Alright..." I hear her tearing the wrapping paper and wait a couple second, mentally calculating the time she takes to read everything. "Emma...Are you kidding me?"

-"I know, right? Do we lack creativity?" I laugh.

-"No! We simply know what we really want!" She squeals.

My gift is nothing more than another plane ticket. A real one. I'm going back to the USA in 4 days instead of 11. I want to start the new year with my girlfriend.

Clearly, our fears of being apart and the uncertainty of our future affected our choice of Christmas presents.

-"I couldn't stay away from you for too long. 11th of January wasn't working for me. Besides, who was I gonna kiss on New Year's Eve? Worse...who were you gonna kiss?" We both chuckle.

-"That's a two weeks difference. Are you okay with that? Are your parents okay with that?"

-"Yes and yes, Avery. It always comes down to my happiness, and that will always be related to you."

-"I love you, Emma. I can't believe we're gonna spend New Year's Eve together!" She squeals once again, making me chuckle. "I have to buy you a ticket for the party. You'll love it."

-"You don't have to. I asked Rose to buy one for me as soon as I bought the plane ticket."

-"Sneaky! I'll pick you up okay? I'll be staying at my mom's so you'll stay with us too, okay?" She speaks fast.

-"Okay." I chuckle.

-"And you know who's going with us, right?" She asks, this time slowly.

-"I know. Almost all of your friends." I know Sophia is going too but I refuse to say her name in this happy conversation. "I also asked Sarah, but I'm not sure she'll go."

-"Cool." She says. "Fuck, I can't believe I've been moping about this for the past few days and the cure for it was always right here."

-"You could've opened it before, but no...'no opening the presents before the 25th at midnight'." I mock her.

-"Not funny, Emma. I was really torn about the new year's party. I wanted to have fun but at the same time I knew I would miss you throughout the whole night."

-"A couple champagne glasses would help you with that."

-"Would only make it worse, you mean? I would call you to tell you how much I love you and how much I miss you, while crying like a baby."

-"Stop!" I say, laughing. "You'll make me regret going and miss all that."

-"Don't worry, it may still happen." She laughs too. "Seriously, I couldn't ask for a better present. Thanks, babe!"

-"You're welcome. It's a gift for both of us, really."

-"So is mine."

We kept talking for a while, making plans for my return. Shortly after, we both had to return to our families.
