Today I woke up feeling a sense of relief. A feeling of tranquility, a feeling of not having to panic because something is getting out of my control.
Soon after I woke up, I sent a text message to Avery inviting her for a 'tea party for two' at my place. Except, since it's summer, it will be either iced tea or lemonade.
As I'm finishing the lemonade I hear a knock on the door and suddenly my heart skips a few beats.
Fuck! How do I great her?!
-"Hi, Avery. Please come in." I say as I open the door and step aside for her to walk in.
-"Did you bake me a cake? Cause I can smell cake." She says, playfully, as she drops her purse near the couch and goes to the kitchen.
It's amazing to see that she feels comfortable here, and we're not getting one too many awkward moments, where we don't know what to do or what to say.
-"I did. And tea, and lemonade." I say, proudly." I swear I'm not trying to buy your forgiveness, but if it helps... I'm good with it."
-"We'll see...it depends on your skills to make cakes."
Her mood is great today, and it matches mine.
I pour some iced tea for both of us and we go sit on the couch. The TV is on, with low volume, tuned in a music channel.
We're sitting next to each other with a small distance between us. Sitting sideways, facing each other, we're ready to keep our conversation, but again, we don't know where to start.
I take my time looking at her as I haven't looked in a long time. Not checking her out, but really look at her. Noticing her beautiful eyes and the frown she's making because we're silenced. Her lips that are pursed as if annoyed by the situation. Her blonde hair...
-"Emma?" she interrupts my thoughts.
-"Avery?" I shake my head and I feel a slight blush forming.
-"You were staring...and not talking." She says.
-"Oh! Sorry. I was just...appreciating that you're standing in front of me right now. That we're sitting in my couch, drinking iced tea, ready to have a nice conversation." I give her a genuine smile that she repays, and we have another couple seconds of silence.
-"Have you ever kissed a girl...before me?" She asks, suddenly, taking me by surprise. "It's a conversation starter."
-"God! Avery...do you want more tea? I'm gonna check out the cake." I say really fast and proceed to jump from the couch and towards the kitchen.
My face is burning.
The question got me by surprise but it doesn't matter, because I could never prepare myself to answer even with a three weeks' notice.
I'm checking the cake, not really paying attention to it. It hasn't been in the oven long enough to be ready, and I know it.
She doesn't say anything else. I look at her from a distance and I see that she's supporting herself on the back of the couch in a way that allows her to stare at me in the kitchen.
-"Ems, come back here. I'm sorry." She says and I timidly obey, walking back slowly.
-"Only because you called me Ems." I say as I sit back on the couch.
I want to smile, but I'm pouting. I hide my head on my hands and answer her question with a simple 'no'.
-"Not even...drunk kissing your best friend?" she asks, amused.
