Chapter 12
Lily folded Harry's letter and put it in her pocket. During the last three months, they had sent so many letters to each other that her drawer was now stacked with letters.
She stretched her legs in front of her, leaned back on the tree and closed her eyes. She could hear the rustling of wind and... Lily opened her eyes. Someone was walking towards her. She could hear the crunch of snow. She peered around the tree and saw James walking towards her.
"Of all the people... "
He noticed Lily sitting under the tree and raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Lily asked.
"That's my tree." he said, sitting down next to her.
"It is the school's tree. Your name isn't written on it." she said.
He pointed at a place on the bark of the tree above her head and she saw the initials JP carved on it. When she looked closer she saw the other letters below it - SB, RL and PP.
Of bloody course.
"It's the Marauders' tree." he said.
"You're annoying. I came here for some time alone and you have to disrupt my tranquility." she said.
"You are always allowed to leave." he said, leaning on the tree and crossing his legs at the ankle.
"But I came here first!" Lily protested.
"Then you'll just have to smile and bear with the annoying me, love."
"Don't call me love."
"Yes, my lady."
"Ugh! I hate you." she said. James only smiled brightly in reply.
Both of them knew it was a lie.
Lily glared at him and turned to stare at the frozen lake.
What is he even doing here? It's snowing. He could've just stayed inside.
You could have stayed inside too.
Shut up, brain. I hate it when you're right.
"How is quidditch going?" she asked, turning back to him.
James stared at Lily for a moment before he burst out laughing.
"Seriously, Evans. How undecided are you? One minute you're saying you hate me and the next minute you're asking me how quidditch is?"
"I was just trying to be a good --" Lily stopped suddenly.
I won't say 'friend'. He's not my friend.
"Good what?" he asked.
"Good human being." she said.
"That's not what you were going to say." he said with a knowing smile.
"That's exactly what I was about to say." she said, crossing her arms across her chest and narrowing her eyes at him.
"You were about to say friend." he said simply.
"No. Because you are most definitely not my friend."
The words had left her mouth before she could even think.
